VW PASSAT OPINIONS PLEASE

1) VW is building a car to compete in the American midsize segment. If you want to be competitive, then your requirements for upkeep need to be competitive. But their's are not.

2) Stuff breaks. Just because you had to replace one doesn't mean it is a common issue.

3) Brake fluid is hydroscopic but there needs to be a way for the water to enter. Most modern systems are fairly well-sealed. Also, just because the fluid contains moisture does not mean it needs to be condemned. The boiling point may still be adequate for the anticipated use and the corrosion inhibitors could still be sufficient.

This article is a bit dated but the principles remain the same. The info is from the Big 3:

"BRAKE FLUID -- Ford does not recommend changing DOT 3 fluid or flushing the system. Ford says their recommendation is a "risk versus benefit" assessment because there's a potential for doing more damage than good. If sediment or contamination from the master cylinder is pushed through the ABS unit, it can cause big problems. Flushing the system also increases the risk of air entrapment and leaks, says Ford.

Ford says their brake systems are engineered to tolerate brake fluid contamination of up to 3 percent moisture without fluid boil (which is close to the saturation point for DOT 3 brake fluid). If the fluid has more moisture, it probably has some liquid water in it and should be changed.

Ford said they measured the water content in 7 to 10 year old Ford vehicles and found that the water content was actually quite low: only 1 to 1-1/2 percent. So based on their findings and the design target of 3 percent water, they see no need to change the fluid for preventive maintenance.

Does pushing the caliper pistons in when changing the pads push contaminants from the calipers back toward the ABS unit or master cylinder? Ford says no. There's not enough movement or migration to cause a problem."

With the exception of Viper, all current domestic Chrysler products use high temperature DOW 1000 DOT 3 brake fluid, which has a boiling temperature of 550 degrees F and surpasses the government's minimum performance requirements for DOT 3 brake fluid. Chrysler says their fluid can absorb up to 3 percent water and still meet the DOT 3 specifications for boiling temperature. Consequently, they see no reason to change the fluid for preventive maintenance.

In the past, European brake systems used vented master cylinder caps and lower quality hose and seal materials which allowed moisture to contaminate the fluid relatively quickly. Because of this, the brake fluid had to be changed periodically. But this is no longer true. Most European and domestic vehicles use sealed master cylinders with EPDM hoses and seals that resist moisture penetration. So fluid changes are a thing of the past, Chrysler says."

Every 2 years or 20,000 miles.
Dealers are independent businesses. Their websites should be policed but that is hardly the case.

1) That is debateable. From a maintenance standpoint there are clearly some gaps compared to their competition.
2) Your opinion. Not supported by any real data.
3) One company's opinion. A company that is in the business of selling fluid.

Well, VW doesn’t want to kill its owners. Obviously Lexus doesn’t want too. But, since Toyota is different company from Lexus, they I guess don’t care.
Or as long as there is sheep, there will be wool.

The Passat engine is competitive to what? It's no GTI/GLI/Atlas/Atlas Cross Sport engine.

It quickly becomes outgunned compared to the V6 engine in the Camry, and the 2.0-turbo on the Accord.

He is talking about 2.5 naturally aspirated engine in Camry.
 
When I had my VW the 4AT was long known as problematic. The DSG was also problematic, I believe the issue was clutch related. And of course their DMF was problematic, I had one go, as did many others, on our manual transmission cars.

I liked the car for what it was, but to say they didn’t have transmission problems would be to ignore history.

DSG is different than what this vehicle has. And not all DSG were problematic. But, completely different transmission.
 
In the land of over-maintainers such as BITOG what's a little service going to hurt you?
We have people here doing 3 complete oil changes before the car has 2500 miles on it.

Not what you stated—VW doesn’t have bad transmissions, I brought up a pair of known problem childs, ergo very much VW has some bad transmissions. They have warts like everyone else.

I was specifically referring to transmission this Passat comes with. If anything, 8ATB in Camry is the one that was problematic and Toyota left owners hanging.
And DSG is still superb gearbox. I had it.

With known flywheel issues. Which is fine, not a bad tradoff for what it does. But not problem free either.

Not necessarily the best transmission for toaster drivers, no?

I am nit sure all of them have that issue. I think that was specific to that engine.
Passat has Aisin AT. Same as 6AT slush box in Toyota.
 
I just read this about the new F150. Not changing brake fluid as regular maintenance is absolutely ludicrous for most parts of the country.
Unless you are testing the fluid properly using a hot tester



As brake fluid ages, some of the fluid properties deteriorate. Changing brake fluid at least every 3 years ensures the fluid meets its optimal specified performance. Scheduled Maintenance for 2020+ Model Year vehicles will include Brake Fluid Change with a specified interval (see Owner’s Manual for details). Refer to the appropriate 2020+ Model Year vehicle workshop manual (WSM) for brake fluid change procedures.

VW coachwork is superior to anything made in Asia. Look at the Passat's door hinges, I believe they are forged units. Most Toyotas and other Asian makes have stamped steel hinges. I get that a lot of people favor drive train reliability over coachwork and refined body assembly, but most of the Asian makes are a nightmare to repair with any severe collision damage.

I remember the sales guy when I bought my VW bragging about the forged hinges.

Guess what? the rest of the door warped and by 200k it was hard to open & close. A mechanic did try to twist the door and "align" it, but in short order it warped again. That car never did have "easy to open" doors (I have a disabled kid, it matters).

Lot of good those forged hinges did. Maybe you're right and after a collision no Asian car is the same again, I have no input there. And I loved loved loved my Jetta interior over anything else I've had since. Save for road noise and interior rattles when it got old, but that's probably true of most anything.
