What Joe Redneck does to his truck has absolutely nothing to do with a corp the size of VW cheating .gov regulations. Joe Redneck is on the local cops to police. Hard to imagine anyone condoning what VW did and being OK with it. If it's not such a big deal why don't they just reprogram the cars to be legal? Oh, because they can't, the car as designed will hardly run.

I turned my TDI Jetta in on Tuesday. They took in 8 cars that day and all 8 were sitting next to each other on the lot. They were all serviceable and intact. There was also a car carrier that was loaded with TDIs on the way off the lot. These cars were also intact.

I suspect that a very very small minority of people will remove items from their car prior to turn in. My specialist asked me if I wanted to keep the spare tire or the floor mats and I told her no.

On the bright side of this whole tragedy, VW processed my paperwork in a quick manner, set up my dates for turn in and disbursed my electronic fund transfer in the times they said they would.

I will miss this car but it had too many shortcomings to make it practical to keep.

Hmmm the situational ethics is strong...

The same bunch that wants to hold VW accountable for their transgression, turns into thieving scum the second it benefits them...

The really sad thing is - I'm not surprised.

Of course they will.
The good cars will be exported to markets where the emissions are not as much of a concern and resold. The baddies probably will be as well, since they'll be useful as parts cars, ocean freight backhaul is cheap and even a parts car is worth more than one that's simply scrapped. I doubt that many of these cars will get crushed.
Why should VW or any other company pay full bucks for a stripped product?

Of course, so they should not be willing to take stripped down junkers.

We have no emissions rules here so if they wanted to bring them to Saskatchewan and sell them cheap, we would welcome them with open arms. I would buy one myself, in fact! A neighbour has one, and it costs him $10 to run to the city. Costs me $20 in my little car or $60 to take the truck. The little thing burns NO fuel at all, so why does anyone care about the emissions!

You might not have emissions testing in SK but there are still emissions regulations in Canada that are very similar to those in the US.
That said, I have an '06 TDI and the fuel efficiency is great, it's also a really nice car to drive on the highway, smooth, quiet, and the torque is nice.

I really hope they don't scrap these. I don't like being wasteful and if they can convert all those engines into portable generators for use in third world countries then at least it went to a good cause.

The frames and body panels don't have much use outside of smelt and recycle, but I hope we are past the horror of how cash for clunkers required that the engines be seized up permanently.

Sorry. Nothing personal.

I took it to a more advanced level. The EPA regulations, at least the fine print, is that the emission regulations are tied to the year the engine is built. So, for my current semi truck, I purchased a new, off the line 2013 MY semi truck, minus engine and transmission, and dropped in a pre-emission factory remanned engine in it. All perfectly legal per the regulations. A engine with no EGR, no SCR, no DPF, in a truck with a model year where a regular production truck would have all that goofy stuff. All titled and registered and been operating since I got it put on the road in August of 2012.

That VW is even being targeted is the height of hypocrisy. Allow me to run a non-emission 12.7L engine with full regulatory blessing in a 2013 vehicle, while picking on VW for a decimal point or two of excess in emission on their little diesels. The inmates have indeed taken over the asylum.

I have a greenie far left co worker who is keeping his 2013 Jetta TDI wagon. IIRC, it has well over 100k already.

He said something a while back about how he'll at least get a ~$900 dealership gift card for parts, service etc.

One word came to mind when he told me that: Oil!!!

Petty as it may be, the greater issue here is misrepresentation. That's something that should never sit well in business.

It's a shame VW played right into the EPA's hand.

VW gave everyone 2 $500 gift cards last winter.

If he chooses to have it fixed, he'll probably get around $5,000-$6,000 in settlement money.

That money will go fast when the hpfp, dpf, or egr fail. Honestly the software cheating was the least of their worries. The 2.0 CR Tdis weren't ready for prime time on more ways than one.
