Good Afternoon folks
Bored out of my mind so figured I'd cut one of the 12 Tough guards I got off eBay. Allied Signal vintage. Looks good and media still good, very hard to tear. ADBV is very soft as well.
Enjoy the photos.
Even though it looks fine..that looks like a pretty old virgin.
Can anybody decipher the date code?
OTOH, I would have no problems using that filter..
Well, I chatted online with tech person from FRAM. Gave part # to him; he said it is NOT FRAM part #
He did say it was Allied Signal part # though
All the boxes the filters were in said copyright 1997

The best guess is that the date code is the DDDY, So the 262nd day of 1997.
Maybe ... or the "F" could be the year code and 262 the Julian calendar day.
Same thing was pondered with this old Allied Signal oil filter. It has date code A21431. If the first letter is the year code, then that one was made 5 years before Stude's filters.

Strange that the "tough guard" lettering in the last photo is so wonky. Are they all like that Stu?
All 12 are yes.
At this time of Fram, the Tough Guard was marketed as a truck filter with stronger can. The orange cans of that day iirc were thinner than they are today. The tough guard was meant to "take a beating" or whatnot.
Thats why the typeface is that way. Its a "rugged, muddin, truckin" font.
^^^ Depends on what environmental conditions they were stored at. Also depends on if the inside was treated with any kind of anti-rust compound. Seen some not as old as these with rust inside.
