Container looks dirty. My hunch is that jug contains used oil, put in an old M-1 container. Guy figured out that folks at the Walmart return counter never check. If the UPC code scans they take it back.

Agreed. High possibility of it being Mobil 2.
Scammers should at least tale enough pride in their treachery to wipe down the outside of the container.

It's easy enough to gently back the cap off to feel if the 'anti-tamper' is either attached or free.
I had a Kirkland signature two pack leak out on me on the way home, turns out they didn’t even need to reseal the bottle. They just hot glued the cardboard box back together with their 10 quarts of used oil inside.

Don't tell anybody but I have a clamp which holds holds the spigot on box oil packaging open so I can funnel my old oil back into the bag.
Then I do a box reseal.
The only real hassle is not being able to use the spigot when the oil is new as I don't want to disturb the access.
Only kidding.

Looks like the flaw in Mobil's system, while understandable, is that they use the same UPC for the product (full synthetic, high-mileage, 10W-40, etc) but the API spec doesn't factor in. I scanned that UPC with the WM app and it comes up completely normal. The UPC on that bottle in the OP's post is the same UPC Mobil1 uses today. This is either used oil in a leftover bottle or a bottle of new one someone found buried in their garage or it was lost inside the store and when found, they scanned the UPC and it's a valid product according to their system.

Remember how scandalous people act when an oil manufacturer rolls out the next API rated oil and people (here) act like all of the old stuff should be destroyed because it's "obsolete". Walmart, Autozone, etc don't care as they will just sell the old stuff and transition to the new stuff once the run out.

I’d still use it in my my Toyota if the price was right! Where are you located? Those shelf price tags look very different than my local walmart

Wow, that’s probably as old as me lol, maybe a bit younger. I’d use it in my truck or Beetle though no questions asked. Or in the old van too. I also never realized ExxonMobil was based out of my home state that’s interesting.
