Hi, did a little searching and no answer pops up at me.
Is it possible to tell if you have mobil1 other than some sort of $ lab test?

Even a lab test probably wouldn't work. You would do what, take a sample from your engine and compare it to a known sample of Mobil 1 (straight from a bottle) ? That sample from your engine isn't going to be "pure" or 100% M1 once you put it in the engine. It will be mixed with contaminants, the previous oil, and so on.

Sounds like a "trust" issue....

Why?

You can heat 2oz in a small frypan or erlynmeyer to 350 then 400F and watch for smoke and discoloroation. Use MC5000 as a control.

Do this outside and wear protective equipment.

Then again - don't do this at all

I'm sure the oil has telltale chemical markers in it the XoM lab can ident, but your engine didn't explode yet - did it?

Not really. Though a lab test would confirm it's a high magnesium oil for M1 20/30 grades only. That's about the only oil out there that's still high magnesium other than say Castrol Edge 0w-40.

With 500-700 ppm Mg in there, there might be a simple chemical or reactive test for indicating magnesium.

Some funny, odd answers above.
Only thing I can think of, and this just shows if its synthetic or not, is to take a sample, put in a small jar, then get some conventional oil of the same viscosity type (5w30 for example) and put it in another jar, then put them both together in the freezer overnight. Freezer is at around 0 deg F, so Mobil 1 will be a tad thinner (viscosity lower) when you pour it out.

That's a good idea thanks.

Ya, the shop did not bring a lot of confidence.

If you feel that way, odds are they probably did rip you off. Quick lube shops are notorious for it. Save your money, time, and effort trying to nail them, it will cost more than it's worth. Consider it done and move on from there. Next time DIY would be my recommendation.

Well, you just learned a valuable life lesson, nothing more. Learn from it and move on.

I just want to commend you for correctly spelling "gypped"

Find a quick lube shop where they have a bulk fill you like, and get that. Like a Kendall semi-synthetic, that should see you through 10,000 miles (16,000 KM).

My local uses Valvoline DuraBlend semi-synthetic, which is fine by me.

If you need to be 100% sure it's the full synthetic of your choice, then it's best to DIY.

Ok - the 15k gives rise to your concerns - however with the prediction of 3 quarts top off - you will freshen up with known M1 each time. (Unless it consumes less this OCI).
10k is always a safer compromise until next time.
