Valvoline Restore & Protect

Why not try maxlife? A lot of people here have reported various levels of success here through the years
There will always be some inherent overlap in formulas - especially Valvoline being a large blender vs a fully integrated oil company - so, from their website - one can find mutual claims or assertions …

My wife's Mazda 3 has an interesting mileage pattern on it's first VRP OCI, used to get around 32mpg ; now it alternates each tank between 28mpg and 33mpg. Her car is used almost exclusively for commuting the same 70 mile loop daily so not in her driving patterns.

I've also noticed a slight oil smell and it is down about 1/3 quart about 1500 miles in, I suspect it's cleaned a few spots out and maybe losing a hair here and there. This run is the prescribed 0w20, but I'm switching her to 5w30 VRP for the remaining three changes. I've already got the jugs waiting in the garage.

I emailed Valvoline about VRP vs. High Mileage and this is what I got back:

"Restore & Protect does contain seal conditioners but not at the elevated level of the Extended Protection High Mileage Full Synthetic.

If treating and preventing oil leaks is the greater concern, the Extended Protection High Mileage would be better recommended for use.

Thank you and have a great day.

Valvoline Product Support"

They only mention their Extended Protection High Mileage oil and not their standard high mileage oil (what I run), despite me referencing information from the standard high mileage oil in my question. So take that for what you will.

Edit: I suppose one way to interpret this is that maybe the VRP and standard HM are possibly equivalent given their focus on the EPHM in the response? I am following up to ask for spec sheets for the three oils to compare.

i have seen dirty filters on engines run with the EPHM. it’s still my favorite OTS oil

VRP is now showing up in Ontario Canada from NAPA. My local shop has a bay-box in stock but the price is ... not enticing. :/

They have had that for a while now in Canada at NAPA, but it doesn’t make sense why they’re not bringing it here in the 5 qt jugs 🤔
This is the first I've actually seen it myself, the NAPA website had no listings last I checked.

I'm totally fine with a bay-box and actually prefer it but I expect some savings over quart / gallons / etc. Right now I can't justify 3x the price of Walmart or Costco for engine oil. Maybe 1.5-2x?

I was just starting to wonder about using Amsoil vs Valvoline (now that VRP is starting to show up in my area). I can get Amsoil SS shipped for slightly less than VRP (w no shipping). If I were to go with either one I'd have to get analysis done to benefit from the 3x cost vs Walmart or Costco.

In my case, all the engines are all over 10yrs old (high mileage) but none of them really burn / leak anything significant. Should I entertain:

1. Amsoil HM, Euro, SS + testing
2. Valvoline Restore & Protect + testing
3. Stick with Walmart HM / Costco, no testing, 5k OCI

The cheapest is Costco 5w30 on sale, but no HM, 0w40 or 5w40 option.
VRP is only interesting to me in 5w30 but there's no 0w40 or 5w40 option.
Amsoil has the most options available along with "free ship".

Here we go:

Base oil information and exact additives and ingredients concentrations are proprietary information are not provided by our product formulators.

Thank you."

Can someone who is a bit more knowledgeable about the nuts and bolts of oil break down the differences? All I can tell is that the zinc and phosphorus concentrations are very close between RP and standard HM and a bit more with the EPHM.

If people are using Supertech/Kirkland/Amazon/dealer mystery lube for hundreds of thousands of miles, I don’t see why VRP would be an issue as a permanent oil to use.
Valvoline R&P might become my only oil for all vehicles once I use up my stach of other oils.
Why only do 4 OCI with Valvoline R&P. Why not use it forever.

It may be a misconception by many (not based on any facts) that Valvoline makes mediocre full synthetic oil.
Their chemists discovered this revolutionary cleaning ingredient that no other company thought of.
