Valvoline Restore & Protect

you keep pointing to this post, maybe sub your next oil change with some VRP? it’s not like it’s expensive oil.

What do you mean, keep pointing to a post? That's the first time. I've mentioned before I don't have oil consumption issues so I'm willing to go out on a limb and say piston ring deposits don't need addressing. If there's a side benefit of varnish cleaning like a lot of people on BITOG have assumed it would good to see some definitive proof before I switch. Since the instructions are to use R&P up to 4 oil changes then that's a long commitment for me since I don't have frequent oil changes. My preference but I don't want to switch back and forth between oils.

Do you need to build a rocket so you can prove to yourself that the Earth isn't flat? There's so much info that shows VRP works. If you don't believe it, then keep digging for 6+ more months. 😉

Please link the individual posts. Thanks in advance.

just wondering what yall have been defining a 'oci' as for a VRP run?

I'am approaching about 3k miles now on my 2nd run of VRP and not sure if i should change soon or wait longer?

not sure if longer oci's of vrp clean better or if constant early oil changes are better?

i am a 6K OCI guy with OTS oil. that is what i run VEP for aswell.

The posts on how to build a rocket, or the ones to prove the Earth isn't flat, lol. Go look on YT, there are tons of videos about VRP and people's experiences. You seem like you want people to hand feed you the information that you can instead do self research on since nobody here seems to satisfy your quest for proof. There's so much info about it now that it could be found easily by anyone.

Why don’t you want to switch? And it’s not really switching back-and-forth, it would only be for four oil changes.

The fill hole on my old Sienna has a baffle on it as well so I can’t see inside either. And I just replaced the valve cover gaskets. But I’m running it anyway, just because. I figure if the company says it does what it does, then it does what it does. My only real metric will be oil consumption and it’s not that bad, even after nearly 500,000 miles. But I have posted pictures in the past of the underside of the valve covers and the valve train so this vehicle could probably benefit from the oil.

I'll admit I haven't read all 96 pages of this thread, but has anybody else noticed significantly more oil consumption when using VRP?

My '07 Prius with 228K consumes all flavors of oil, but with Castrol Edge HM 5w-30, consumption has been consistent at about 1 qt. per 3500 miles for a while now after a couple piston soaks.

With VRP 5w-30, consumption is about 1 qt. per 2000-2200 miles.

Yeah like I said if the varnish stays then it stays. It's an old car I have and I'm merely curious if anyone has seen it do some cleaning or significant cleaning. Varnish doesn't not have any negative effects. But like I said it's not going to kill the engine. For the umpteenth time I'm merely curious if anyone has seen any improvement. This horse is looking really disgusting.
I know that several on YT have shown the dipstick getting cleaned up. Some showed before / after and some just mentioned it and referred back to previous videos.

Is this after more than one OCI? I have heard of a few instances where the consumption initially went up on the first OCI and then went down after the second and third one.

I would use the mfg recommended OCI for severe duty. Valvoline refers to, "standard maintenance intervals".

I didn’t notice any change until my 3rd 5k oci. Almost gave up to be honest.

I'm on my second interval now. First run was 5,700 miles. I'm 3,000 miles into my second run now.

I put R&P in two of our cars in early December.
1. Wife's 2016 Malibu, 120k miles on the odometer. Don't expect much since the previous three oil changes were with HPL but I will take apart the filter and see if I can find anything.
2. Daughters rust bucket 2007 Ford Fusion V6, 143k. This car will be interesting when I pull the filter. The problem with this one is that it had an oil leak somewhere on the engine. The leak has increased in volume quite a bit and will have to be fixed now. Probably cleaned some junk around a bad seal/gasket. I don't blame R&P for the leak since it's just doing what it's supposed to do.

2007 Honda CRV with 165k miles on K24 engine. taking over from my SIL who was ahh inconsistent with the OCI over the years. VRP going in next week or two once I get it back from local Honda shop to diagnose some front end issues. likely will have them do a valve adjustment as well and should have some good pics to share with the valve cover off! 😳🫣

A solid 4 OCI's would be recommended here.
