Valvoline Restore & Protect

One thing I can say is that I haven't noticed anything "bad" about this oil. We have six vehicles currently running on it. No weird noises or anything to make me not like it. The one guy is running it in his '12 F150 3.5l EB with 182k. He has reported that for the first time in a long time he hasn't heard any timing noise on start up which it had been doing. Did the R&P help? No idea, but it was something to note.

I am on my second fill of VRP 5w20 and although i see no difference in anything i also see no reason not to run it. Its butter smooth and lubricates just as well as any other syn i have used. Good product and the price is good.

You have no sig. They have been removed.
This is my fleet and more to be added soon lol 🥴

I recall at least one person here saying that they thought it would be in the clearance section of Walmart really fast.
I bought one 5qt bottle on clearance at Walmart. I've been going back to hope for more 😁. This Walmart shares a parking lot with BJ's so I'm there frequently. Caviat is that this Walmart does not have VRP on the shelves at all. They do list it for the oil change special at the service thing.

3 other Walmart's I pass do have it on the shelves. I think that one random bottle was due to shelf space constraints at this particular one and they must have had a couple and cleared them.

Friend’s Subaru Outback 2013, 2.5 engine, 190k miles. 3.3k miles on R&P 5w30. Oil consumption was about 1 quart per 1500 miles on the usual 6k dealer’s OCIs. The original PCV valve changed 1k miles ago.
Looks like oil consumption went down (could be partially clogged PCV). Oil was very very dark. I was expecting to see lots of debris in the filter since it was first “cleaning” after 190k miles.

I'm trying to decide what to do in my 2014 Volvo 5 Cylinder.

I've had Restore and Protect 5w-30 in there 5000 miles now. Consumption keeps getting worse compared to the M1 0w-40 (what I used) and dealer Castrol Professional 5w-30.

I think R&P has probably gotten thinner and thinner during OCI, so consumption just keeps increasing during this OCI, but it started out worse than those other products too. I was at maybe 1 quart in 3500-4000 miles with the previous products, towards the end of this OCI I'm as much as a quart in 1700 miles.

I'm trying to decide if I do 1-2 more OCIs with Restore and Protect, go back to M1 0w-40, or try HPL Euro 5w-40.

I would try one more short OCI with R&P.
Then go QS 5W40 Euro (a3/b4) or any Euro C3 oil to be a little bit gentler to the catalyst depending on the consumption.

Edit:
Half a quart of oil consumption in 5k is normal on the 5cyl also, atleast if you use the turbo.

I would run it a couple more 3k mile oil changes and let it work. I noticed on my Honda it started burning a little at the end of my 5k mile oci. Once i changed it it has been staying full, 1k mile into the next run. I am going to run it between 3-4k miles and then change it.
Have you tried doing a piston soak? Is the pcv system good on the Volvo?

Thanks! I'm not having a lot of faith, so I appreciate your encouragement. I haven't tried piston soak. The oil trap that includes PCV system was done 10k miles ago.

If things don't get better, I'm going to be very curious to see when I go back to a Euro oil, if consumption is now bad on those too.

May have nothing to do with rings being dirty and just a viscosity issue.

Next time you change the oil I would do a piston soak with Berryman's B12. Esp since your motor is very easy to access the plugs.
My Honda was not burning prior to this last run and it used 1qt. I was running R&P to clean up the heavy varnish in the motor and it must have dislodged something in the rings, pcv is new. I'll just continue to monitor it and keep it full.

Or just the oil too. When my kid had a C30 it burned Castrol and Mobil 1 1-2qts per 7k mile oci. We switched to PP Euro L 5w30 and it was the only oil out of the 3 that stayed full.

I’m wondering what R&P will do in the ole’ 3.9 V-6 in dad’s old Dakota. So far oil is darkening. Will have full load of R&P next oil change. Currently some rotella SM 10w30 and HPL 30

In mine it doesn't burn at all, trans sucks in it as my kid let it run low, so she is a 3sp but runs like a champ. I wouldn't think anything funky would happen but we shall see

Hi everyone, first post here so bear with me …

Much has been said about the YouTube video by LSJr. on his field trip to the Valvoline test lab and how Valvoline were concerned about the possibility of VRP going to good a job too quickly and causing the filter to become clogged.

The FAQ for VRP now says deposits are dissolved and held in suspension until the oil is drained and I quote -

There is no impact to the performance or longevity of the oil filter.”

https://www.valvolineglobal.com/en/restore-and-protect/

I’d say that changes things.

What say you?
I prefer OE Toyota filters for my fleet - that’s good to hear.

All these comments about oil consumption. Oil consumption is a weird beast.

500 miles into my 3rd run with the VRP it drank a quart, after going nearly 1000 miles between topping it off with a quart at the end of the 2nd run.

And then today, after 700 miles I was half a quart low, so I added some. But if it continues at that rate, I'll be at nearly 1qt per 1400-1500 miles, which is another improvement in overall oil consumption. Just odd how it fluctuates so much.
