Valvoline Restore & Protect

I really think buster makes a good point about synthetic oils in what they cannot do, that is the reason for Valvoline Restore and Protect. In an engine that has already had its 1st oil change at like 5000 miles, and then goes onto use a quality synthetic oil at reasonable OCI's or by the OLM, then Valvoline Restore and Protect may not be needed. We cannot compare an off the shelf synthetic in a test against VRP, that ship has sailed.

Now, a used vehicle with cheap oil that is changed when it is changed, can benefit from VRP. I do not even want to see any so-called control test with VRP versus another oil, I want to see real world testing from BITOG Members and others. Valvoline might be onto something, let's see how this plays out over the next few months or so.
I plan on pulling the oil filter on my brother's versa with 250k miles that's been running vrp

Oh but I thought Valvoline isn't good and doesn't work and you must go for boutique oils. Hmmm.

Seriously though that is proof R&P works but I am sure others will try to say otherwise. A bit concerning on how quickly it cleaned though, make me wonder if maybe they put too much of their cleaning additive in the batch he got.

What you're seeing looks like sludge to me, not piston deposits. The way it cleans piston deposits, per Valvoline, is it dissolves them and the dispersants likely carry it away or keep it in suspension until they're gone or in filter.

I have no doubt it works. The LSJ video cleared that up IMO.

I'm more curious how it works.

I've found you can learn things from the 1 out of 5 star reviews on Amazon about products.

For the Valvoline Restore and Protect (See url here),

I had a bad experience 😭
After a week I put this new oil. The crankshaft seal started leaking oil. If you car have a lot miles don't use. I use same brand of oil full synthetic high mileage.is perfect for cars over 200000 miles.
(OJO) IN MY EXPERIENCE.

So I had previously posted about preferring to use a "tried and true" oil that has been out for several years.
At that moment, I didn't know about any potential defects with Valvoline Restore and Protect.
I am not saying this 1 negative Amazon review implies a defect, but since this oil forumulation is so new,
it is possible that maybe an unintended side effect of using it could be causing engine seal leaks.

I'd rather have some varnish in my engine than oil stains on my driveway.

Just something to consider before you rush to use this new oil formulation.
Had same thing happen with my Colorado and Castrol Edge. Caught it on clearance at Wally World, said what the heck. Probably had 250k at time. Started leaking like s sieve. Replaced it at 1500 miles and back to Mobile 1 and it stopped after a bit. Sold the truck at 347k engine still strong and pureing right along.

I think it's more about the base oil with VRP than it is about the additives. When I first started visiting BITOG, I recall that Valvoline was touted as "punching over it's weight class" on most UOAs, and nobody could really explain why that happened--the add-pack in Valvoline oils has always looked rather pedestrian compared to other major brands, yet the UOA results were consistently above average with regard to wear. This would imply that Valvoline takes a different approach to how they achieve results and that historically they've been doing that for awhile. VRP is likely the product of that approach.

In hindsight and recalling the clearances everywhere on the old label Castrol Edge EP, perhaps the Castrol EP cleaned better than your Mobil-1 Vanilla?

I am a big fan of the Mobil-1 EP Triple Action & ESP BTW...

Very possible. I have no idea and I've yet to come across anyone that does. I've heard some say it could be a type of synthesized napthalene. This was possibly concocted at the Indian Lab Valvoline uses. Anyone's guess at this point. Possibly other oil manufacturers that have access to expense equipment could find out I'm sure.

When Valvoline offers a Youtube video on how four separate OCIs of this stuff progresses over time in a TGDI-sooty engine, I'll become more-of a believer.
Not enough proof available yet , so the jury is out on this oil . If you have maintained good oil OCI / engine practices (filters / PCV valve) then there is not much to restore and protection from a good synthetic oil will continue . I use Mobil 1 oil and substitute 1 quart and add Rislone every 3rd OCI just for a little extra / different additives cleaning .

*Should Valvoline R&P show real proof results - I may change my mind … In the mean time. I will just casually monitor results.

Im currently testing R&P in my oil burner with stuck rings. Im on my first oci. After the full 4 oci’s I will start a thread with my results.
