I came across this while searching Valvoline's website. Valvoline Restore and Protect in 0W-16.

Is there any technical reason for not doing this? I assume the Valvoline Restore and Protect line has been a good seller for Valvoline.
If the local makeuptheftmart is to be used as an Valvoline Restore and Protect sales barometer yes it's almost never on shelves while there's plenty of everything else.

It sells very well locally. I went to buy a jug in 5w-30 a week ago when it was on sale at Canadian Tire and was a bit annoyed they didn't have the oil on shelve while store listed 5 jugs in stock, I had to ask to get it from the back wherever they were hiding it.
Walmart carries it too and it's basically always sold out, didn't see it go on sale there.

It will sell to anyone who believes they must have what may be recommended in the owner’s manual, and would not otherwise purchase another grade. So I would guess it results in increased sales overall.
That’s probably why they offer a 5w-20 and a 0w-20, even though the 0w-20 could work perfectly fine in any engine calling for 5w-20

It’s also why so many manufacturers still make 10w-30, even though 5w-30 basically renders it obsolete

About 4 years ago at walmart I was buying oil and I tried to help a guy buying oil with his son who wanted to buy Supertech Full Synthetic 0w20 but said to his son there was none. I kindly and politely told him he could use the 5w-20 since a 5w is still acceptable to use down to -20f while 0w is needed at -30f but that texas never gets close to being that cold.

He said thanks but said he didn't want to use "thicker" and right there I told myself in my mind to give up and politely told him "i see, perhaps pennzoil or mobil 0w-20 would be a better choice, they are great brands" and he agreed and got mobil 1 0w-20. There truly are people that are terrified to deviate from whatever the cap says.

Valvoline kind of started this mess so I blame them LOL. I think their High Mileage oil was one of the first niche type oils.
