Valvoline Availability

Hey guys. Long time reader of this great board, and decided to finally join today.

I have a Nissan VQ35DE and run the much-acclaimed GC 0W30 in winter, and Amsoil ASL 5W30 in the summer. Oil filter is the OEM 15208-9E000, and I still have several Made in Japan filters left, and have access to older versions when the part# used to be 15208-31U00 and also Made in Japan of course. This summer, I'm gonna try Mobil 1 10W30 SuperSyn for the first time in this engine's life.

Valvoline has always been my favourite dino brand b/c I love how it pours out almost white like cooking oil, that they've been around for so long, and how top mechanics use it for their cars along with a lot of old-school muscle car guys I know, but I was pretty dismayed doing searches on this board that it's not so great upon objective analysis, such as the deets in this thread: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/valvoline-5w30-sj-sl-retail-1-qt-bottle.35617/

Where I am in the Toronto, Canada area, Valvoline is no longer carried at Canadian Tire nor WalMart. WalMart occasionally gets only 5L conventional jugs. Anyone from the Greater Toronto Area know specifically why? Was it a slow seller, perhaps owing to its poor UOA results? There's a Valvoline oil change place in my town, but I'm curious why they were taken off store shelves. Hopefully they're not as bad as a Motomaster Nugold or Tech2000 oil, lolol.

The link you posted it from 10 years ago. Val Kline has changed their forumulation several times since then. It's still regarded as a weak additive pack, but it's one of those oils that is hard to nail down with a used oil analysis. It looks weak but perforums very well. Sorry to hear it's hard to come by, still available around here.

LOL, thanks! I love this board. I used to think there was something wrong with me being so obsessed with oil, but I'm so happy to see I have company here in large numbers, haha.

Thanks Tinman for your feedback. I like Valvoline as well as Castrol GTX for conventional. Whenever Quaker State or Pennzoil is for sale, I buy those too for friends' cars whose oil changes I do.

I have noticed the same thing, only walmart carries it and only in the 5L jugs, but they did have maxlife and synpower last time i checked. I even called the 1800 # to ask about this but was given no help.

I will tell you, if you can get your hands on some Castrol Syntec 5w40 it would be a good choice. It is probably overkill for my engine (2.5) but it is the smoothest running oil out of every oil I have tried. And I have used every "major" brand of synthetic 5w30. Even the Amsoil (ASE?) and XL. It seems bumping up the viscosity has really made a difference without any fuel economy sacrifice. This is just my

Hmmm, interesting suggestion and observations on the smoothness. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable going up to 5W40 since the Syntec 0W30 I use is almost like a 40-weight oil when it gets to operating temps. I didn't notice any fuel economy change between GC 0W30 and Amsoil ASL 5W30, but I have noted that with the 0W30 and 5W40 viscosities, they don't have the "Energy Conserving" line on the round API symbol on the package like they do with the ham 'n egger grades (i.e. 5W30, 10W30 and 5W20).

My Walmart still has Valvoline conventional in stock and its still my favorite overall choice. Also the conventional always ran great in my VQ35's when I had them. You can also get Valvoline at Napa. They have Synpower and all, at the one near me.

Although Canadian Tire (and Partsouce) have indeed stopped carrying it. Oh well, they suck anyways.

i used to think i was crazy for being obsessed, too. family still does sometimes, lol

Yep, it seems to be gone at the CT's and PS stores in my neighborhood in south Mississauga too. As mentioned, it is certainly in every NAPA I've visited. I must say I've honestly never tried Valvoline of any type. Now that I think of it, I have to give it a shot at least once, other than the exotics and a couple of diesel oils its the only one I haven't tried.
