Is Valvoline really that bad?

I had an 86 Cougar I bought new and used nothing but Valvoline 10-30 in for the first 160K. Then switched to Maxlife 10-30 and never had any troubles with the engine. Gave it away after 245K (after all, who's gonna buy a car with 245K on it), still running excellent, and passed smog in Los Angeles in 2003. Changed a valve cover gasket around 200K and the valve train looked really clean as I remember. Presently using Durablend in my 2002 Infiniti.

Well, no, Valvoline in the plastic bottles is not at all bad, in fact out at my shooting field, I'm going to put one bottle on a post and hit it with a 170 grain 30-30 and post the picture on here. I think the Big "V" will be great for this...

Now, should I use the 5w30, 10w30, 10W-40...?

OK but you got to promise and send in a sample to see if it raises the lead and copper reading.

I am not trying to be smart at all here but I was just wondering if anyone has ever had any engine problems because of Valvoline All Climate oil?

**** no!!!!!!!!!!! Use it with confidence. I use to use it in the winter in a turbo Eclipse, along with VR-1 in the summer. Never a problem, and the car was driven HARD with aftermarket power adders, so the oil was taxed to say the least.

Directly attributed to a formulation with a sub-standard base oil or add pack?

I don't believe so & would be interested in the specifics of any reported engine failures.

Valvoline has been a long time member & contributor to the API organization. Based on this and the requirement to defend against any oil related engine failure claims, it surely is aware of the expected basic performance levels of an API Licensed motor oil.

But my comment is that Ashland heavily promotes the Valvoline brand name & family of products.

It would not surprise me at all if it were revealed that the Marketing types have the front row parking spots & the Chem Lab guys park in the back with the rest of the crowd...

Great Point!!! Maybe a good test for its true "flash point" as well!
