Vacation in the cold synthetic this time?

As everyone else said ML is fine. If you're doing an oil change before you go you can put in the full synthetic version if you want too.

NC winters are not really "cold". Any 5w30 should flow great on a "cold" NC morning.

So I usually run Maxlife 5-30 but was wondering if there would be any noticeable difference if I ran the full synthetic version of Maxlife for this run. Or just don't bother. Again any experience from you guys who know something about below 40 degree weather. Thanks

below 40F....your kidding right? It like below 40 where I live 6 months of the year...lol

In western NC like say Cruso. . it can get down below 0°F. The last two winters it has gotten that low temperature wise out there. Here in eastern Va it has gotten down to low single digits and below 0°F in January 2014. -2°F where I'm at and -7°F not all to far away. . Of course it's not -20°F to -40°F like some people on have experienced. Again, in western NC it can and does get surprisingly cold at times in the winter. Remember that in Haywood county there are 14 mountains with an elevation greater than 6,000 feet and that the average elevation there is 3600 feet. When I look at temperature maps in the computer models the temperature is at 850 millibars. Which is about 5,000 ft above sea level. Guess what the temp at 850 MB is going to be here in southeast Va Monday evening?? -21°C. Which is less than -4°F. Now is it going to be -4°F at the surface? No.. We will likely be in the mid teens for temps. In western NC where elevation is much higher and above 5,000 ft in numerous places it could well be down around 0°F or colder. Even at 3400 ft elevation it will be colder than say 500 ft. There are certainly times where its colder in lower elevations than higher ones. In Vermont last winter in the valleys it was less than 32°F and in the upper 20s in many places. While higher elevations above 2,000 it was in the 40s and even mid 50s ! Huge ice storm with up to an 1 inch of ice in the Champlain valley. However, in general its colder at higher elevations.

Now it's certainly not like Saskatoon, International Falls , Oshkosh, Stowe and the like. But low single numbers below 5°F and below 0 do happen out there. Ohh and I've been to Cold mountain near Cruso NC. It was summer time though. At about 3500 ft of elevation on the side of the mountain. Very pretty area indeed.

Maybe new to you, but take it from someone who has started more vehicles at -30 to -40 than the average College Student has started warm, it works, due to the effect of a small rise in the battery's temperature.

Although oil viscosity at low temperature is certainly playing a role in cold ambient temperature starts, it's mostly the loss of power with falling temperature in the battery that is causing hard starts.

"below freezing" (sic) is not true cold weather as far as starting a vehicle with 5W-xx oil in the sump goes; I would say as long as the ambient temperature (*not* the wind chill corrected temperature) is above 0F you are fine with the cold viscosity of 5W-xx.

If the electrical system is not in good mechanical condition (eg corrosion or loose connections) you will also find you don't have the extra current to overcome the poor conductivity when temperatures fall.

Okay, you've got me. Someone's got to explain this one.

I was making a joke as the last part. I dont have any experience below 40 living in FL. Not saying I think 40 is cold I was saying thats my coldest so I was asking for advice about -10 to 0.

Thanks to all who chimed it who see below 0 temps often. I see I will be fine wit 5-30

Chemical reactions slow down in the cold therefore a batteries efficiency in producing a current slows down. If you take a brief moderately heavy discharge from a battery it produces internal heat. So now the battery will perform better when the start is attempted.

In some cases like the new lightweight Lithium batteries being used in motorcycles the reduction in performance when very cold is much more severe so that a battery pre-heat is essential.

The focus by OP is too much on the oil and less so on the battery. The battery will be far more important than the oil if you are concerned with your vehicle's ability to start.

And one more thing...40F is NOT cold. How do you think people survive up north? It is not at all unusual to see vehicles start up even without having them plugged in up here.

This is a screenshot from the actual owner's manual for your van. 5w20 is recommended and as you can see, it can go down to past -20*F

NC is North Carolina? Not some providence/ territory up in Canada somewhere?

You are worried about starting your car in weather colder than 40*F?

Am I reading this right?

It is about 0*F right now and I need to go out and cut some wood. Hopefully the chainsaw starts.

Your oil will be fine and make sure you have a good battery. Let idle for about 30-60 seconds and take it easy for the first couple of miles.

Thats a lithium thing.

I can't believe all the posts of people talking about 40 degrees as if I actually had a concern or thought 40 degrees was cold. It shows you who actually reads a post vs skims it. Again the statement about 40 degrees was simply to say that it didn't get that cold here and as such I had little experience with temperatures below 0. Thank you to all who pointed out the condition of the electrical system as I hadn't thought about that. And that likely was the issue I suffered last time. as a family van it's not unusual for people to leave lights on and run my battery dead a few times a year. That likely played a role in my difficulty starting last time. Thanks again for reading my post and providing real feedback

Gotta get that next post in before someone beats them to next spot...

It's going to 10F in Asheville tomorrow night...

To be fair, your OP isnt very clear.

Fair enough.

anything below freezing is dangerous? We have had a mild winter up in Minnesota so all I wear is my sweatshirt up intil last week. That said, I would love if we could hit "just freezing"...lol
