When a dealer documents a problem with a engine thats still under warranty that has a knock in it , what does document mean? thanks

The only thing I know about this is what happened to a friend of mine in the earlys 90s.

He bought a new Chevy Truck around 91. At around 1500 miles he took it in to the Chevy dealer because of what he thought was an excessively low oil pressure problem. The Chevy dealer documented the problem gave him a piece of paper saying they documented the possible oiling problem. A number of years later with only around 65,000 some miles it spun some main bearings 400 miles from home. Warranty was gone. The Chevy dealer denied they documented the problem. He could not find the paper they gave him years earlier. He had to pay for a new motor and towing out of his own pocket. Needless to say he never bought a GM vehicle again.

it means something to keep you comming back as yo uwould be satified they will remember the prob. I had dodge document something on my dakota. about low idle. was told they would have their dodge peopel to try and come up with a fix for it. to try back later. call the customer service number 4 months later. they tell me that case was closed. as the dealership said nothing was wrong with the idle. so they cleared it. so my idle is still at 500 RPM and they wont acknowlage it.

so tell them thats all fine and dandy they documented it. now if they will now fix the documented problem you will be very happy.

Tell them that it's still knocking.
Tell them you want it fixed.
The documentation assures that it is recorded, and that it was under warranty at the time.
There are usually steps up the ladder, as you contact the manager, and then the manufacturer.
Be prepared for a long wait, with much doubletalk.
But it will eventually be fixed, if you hang in there.
They are presently hoping that you'll just live with it.

I actually had a good experience recently with Dodge. I had a cracked dash and they agreed to replace it for a $50 deductible. Replacing a bad motor may be another story, though. Does it knock constantly or just when you start it? Could it just be a noisy lifter? Sometimes what sounds like a knock is actually an exhaust leak at the manifold. Does the sound get better or worse when the engine warms up?

The knock is in the bottom end and only does it when it sits over night.Other than that it runs perfict. It has been documented and they said it will be fixed .Mechtech I am doing exactley what you listed and the manager is going through the steps .He said he will not leave me in the cold. He said they would like to do the oil changes to monitor the problem, I think thats a good idea.

you have a manual or auto. I was always told the auto was suppose to idle higher than 500. it runs like its starving for fuel. almost like its about to stall. and has a jerking motion when I let off the brake.

even the stealership said at first it has a lower than average idle. my preditions are comming true. I said aboiut fall time the idle will hit 500. now winter it will be 450 I predict

. my idle was around 650 to 600.

If it dosen,t throw a code it could be very hard to find.I would think possably throttle body sensers or pcm.

its a auto. Mines just fine but what engine year is yours it might be were its newer (presuming) with different programing.

My 2001 Ram (3.9 V-6, 5 speed manual) idles at 750 rpm even with the A/C on. FWIW my Ram has a rattling knock when I first start it up that lasts 1-2 seconds after it sets overnight or longer. That's a normal noise and it has done this since new. It's just the lifters.

Call me over-organized, but I have every paper Im ever given for my vehicles... lots of papers going much more than 10 years back.

You can count on the dealer being less than honest, especially when coupled with non-fault issues like change of ownership, change in filing systems, and how long they hold onto papers in a non-archive setting (which they likely wont spend the effort to get out unless its a court case or similar.

However, this issue was the problem of the owner. He has a duty to be organized and keep all records. Lack of that is what caused the problem in the end.
