I thought that there would be a post on this already but I cannot find it.

I have a 2008 Mustang GT and currently running Mobil 1 5W20. I have a couple spare quarts of Pennzoil Synthetic left over from a prior oil change. Can I top off the Mobil 1 between oil changes with the Pennzoil 5W20 without any issues?

I'm fairly sure that the chemistry should be fine and never read anything against combining two brands of synthetic (unlike controversy regarding mixing synthetic and conventional). Figure it's better to ask to be sure. Thanks.

You should be able to mix ANY two oils -- synthetic or not -- without your engine blowing up. The only possible problems are:

1. The mixed oil won't perform quite as well as either oil would on its own; and
2. You might get a slight peak in oil consumption.

However, these problems are very minor in the short term, and as long as you switch back to whatever type you normally use at the next OCI, you'll be fine.

Go for it, there is no problem doing this.

Most certainly.

I use MC 5w-20, and was at a gas station out of state, noticed I needed about half a quart, and bougt a quart of Exxon conventional, and poured it in without any worries. You'll be fine.

All respondents:
No one answered with any data or study footnotes so - the opinions expressed here are essentially worthless. I cant find the Link to the Patent - but low saps oils are very sensitive to add pack balance to maintain the EP effectiveness and low wear numbers. Even Pennzoil, in the Q&A section on BITOG questions about the new ULTRA, mentioned not to mix; Or did you conveniently forget that? Will it gell? Prob not, will it run better or provide less wear - probably not. Staying with the same add chemistry would be the safer bet.

Pennzoil oil reps addressed that in a question and answer

they advised no / will not cause harm but they said it was suggested no

ARCOgraphite beat me to it

I think some will based on the cost of Pennzoil Ultra try and use it as an oil additive .
That will be a wrong headed thing to do

I may stand corrected: IN a 2004 Ford paper ACEA low saps C1 rating is .05%Phos max and C2 is .07-.09% as mid saps. In ARCO-land though .07-.09% Phos is low SAPS

Having the same rating, like SM, means they HAVE to be able to be mixed.
There won't be an additive "clash', but maybe it won't be at it's absolute best . But it is just as likely that the end result will be better, as well as worse. Why is this never mentioned?
I do believe it is best to 'dance with the girl you brought to the party' concerning oil, but I really have no problems with any mixing .

The only concern I would have is that adding non-Mobil 1 would void the warranty that Mobil offers on the oil.

I would have no qualms at all over the chemistry of the two oils.
