Used to be that using different brands of oil ( same grade ) in one vehical was considered harmful in that it may cause certain issues such as oil burning , seals leaking....etc .

Now that's going back some years ago and I have to wonder now with the modern oils , both Dino and Synthetic , if it's maybe the issue it was ( or thought to be ) at one time .

Reason I'm asking is when oil comes on sale and you have the chance to save some $$'s .

Opinions and solid reasons for or against ?

My feeling is if you change your oil regularly it really shouldn't make much difference .

I have sometimes up to 3-4 different kinds of oil in my oil burning Saturn, (it gets down to end of quarts etc) and I just dump in whatever I have left over.

Oil in sump = better than not enough or no oil in sump, regardless of how many brands are in there!

We have a large bank of data similar to the the one proving Frams are bad to prove you shouldn't. I like to stick to one thing so that if there ever is a problem, I have fewer variables in identifying the problem.

To a degree, many engine failures seem to come from no oil at all.

Thanks sgx6 , some good comments/info .

I'm not talking mixing different brands together for one change , I'm talking being loyal to one brand no matter the cost and using only one brand each change but not necessarily staying with one brand all the time . ( have I confused anyone yet ? :) )

Well that's my feeling on it . I'll buy enough of one brand (synthetic) for 4-5 changes when it is on sale . I do stick with the Napa golds though and buy the 12 packs at a reduced cost .
