I looked at a 1997 Supra twin turbo that has only 60k-ish miles on it. First thing I did was remove the oil fill cap to get a good look at the camshaft. Everything is varnished, dark, and discolored. Oil that`s been used the lifetime of the car is bulk Toyota dino. Is the varnish a result of using dino all it`s life that could`ve been avoided using a top quality grp IV or V synthetic?

Thats a find and a rare car! The car is 12-13 years old - maybe more of a "sunday driver" kinda varnish. Was not toyota oil = EoM driveclean? What weight in the tirbo - hope not 5w30!

I`m not sure on the oil weight, but if I decide to buy it,it`s getting a synthetic 40 weight as soon as I get it home :^)

Probally a result of heat from a forced induction engine cooking the oil. I'm sure quality synthetis resist this heat better resulting in a cleaner engine.

Probably from using a grade too low for that turbo!

Still, you should be able to clean that engine up in no time =)

That engine got HOT. And who knows what oil was used?
I'd use synthetic with any turbo engine.
Varnish is not a killer, but a symptom of heat, old oil, or a faulty PCV system.

People think that they could save 10 bucks on an oil change, in a car they paid 25-30 thousand for.

In 10 years, they could be "saving" like 100 dollars!

That is why they don't use top shelf oils.
