Upgrading Honda CR-V Battery

Running a H6 (Group 48 size) AGM battery in a 2025 CRV Hybrid Touring, while a bit tight fit but an easy swap.

The Hybrid comes with a default size 51 where terminals are opposite of the non-hybrid CR-V size 51R but cables allow any terminal orientation.

I think it’s a 35 I stuck in our 2015 CRV. If memory serves, the negative lead was tight and had to be re-routed to make it work, and I lost a full wrap-around plastic heat shield, which was a nice piece. It was probably 2018 when we did that, and we sold it in 2024. The 2018 battery failed inside of its warranty, but it was 6+ months old when we bought it. The replacement was still going strong when we sold it. So I can’t say for certain what the gains were, but the vehicle certainly did well with the gp 35 and always started strong. Worthwhile mod.

What's a TSX?

Do I need a fatter negative cable when upgrading an 03 CRV to 34F battery?
Acura TSX 1st gen, 2004-2007. This is the Japanese and European Accord. Used the mighty K24 engine.
Yes, replace the smaller negative battery cable with a fatter cable. I do this regardless of the engine.

The group size 35 is a tight fit. Here is is before I swapped the ground cable.

I looked at putting a 24F into our CRV and gave up, too much work to change things. I forget what wasn't going to fit, might have been the battery cable.

The 51 might be expensive but if I have to replace it every 5 years then I'm ok with that--usually I get 7 in our climate on other vehicles with "better" batteries. But your milage may vary. I can see why others would upgrade; I'm of the impression that my CRV could rust out before I'd see return on investment.
A new 51R with 500 CCA costs $162 from Honda dealership or $150 from Walmart.

A new 24F with 585 CCA costs $80 from Walmart.

An Odyssey battery tray costs $30 from a Honda dealership. Some dealerships have them on sale for $22.

Do the math. You'd save $52-60 at time of conversion. At every subsequent battery replacement you'd save $82.

Plus you'd have 17% more CCA,
which would be helpful in winter.

That is assuming that a new battery cable isn't needed. Many people have done the conversion using existing battery cables.

I wonder if you could have fit a 34?

I'm not familiar with 48. I'll have to look it up.

have a everstart platnium 24f AGM in both of the accords in my sig. the 03 has the factor hold down modified to hold the batter and the 05 has a piece of aluminum C channel with the factory hold down bolts. the cars start much quicker and happy to have a 4 year warranted battery.

I did the 24F swap in my 4cyl 2015 Accord a while ago using OE V6 parts to make it look factory. No issues and no regrets. It's now on it's 2nd 24F.

When I looked at it myself, I want to say the cable was short, and the tray wouldn't fit, something. At the time I was quite interested in using a 24F as I had 3 other vehicles with that battery, being able to swap between was yet another benefit. Now none of my other vehicles have that battery size, so, little benefit there.

Car cranks just fine in winter. We see little 0F around here. I can live with spending an extra $80 four years from now, assuming we still have the car, if the battery quits. And my fabrication skills are for the birds.

It's an interesting mod for sure, but not for me.

I see. My cousin is good at modifications and this one is reputed to be relatively easy. It sounds like a fun and relatively easy 30-90 min project to me. I love projects.

To each their own.

This has my interest piqued. Although I have a 2012 CR-V, I wonder what would be needed to fit a 24F battery or if it's even possible.
I believe your 2012 CR-V has the same layout as a 2015 CR-V (i.e., Gen 4). I installed a 24F in my friend's 2015 CR-V Touring last year.

Here are the parts you will need for a neat installation: (1) A bottom battery tray from a 2011-2017 Odyssey (Honda Part #31521-TK8-A00 which is sized for a 24F battery and where the two alignment dimples on the bottom align perfectly in the CR-V's sheet metal battery shelf) and (2) a ~6" longer negative (-) battery cable (which I sourced from WalMart for ~$9). I don't remember clearly, but you may also need 1" longer J-bolts for the hold down bracket.

I'm doing it on an 03 Gen 2 CRV EX (USA).I don't know if this conversion works for your generation of CR-V, but I know it works for most generations of CRV. I also know there's one or two it doesn't work for.

There are probably some people at BITOG who know if this conversion/upgrade/mod would work/fit with your generation of CRV. You could also ask at crvownersclub.com where I'm sure they'd know. Crvownersclub.com has a subforums for each generation of CRV. They also have a CRV Upgrades subforum.

Edited in soon after making this post: I just saw that @Nukeman7 already answered your question. 👍 Nukeman7, @f355spider, @Sequoiasoon and several others really know their stuff, including about doing this modification on CRVs.

Edited in soon after making this post: There's several people at BITOG who know CRVs well, and many at crvownersclub.com. Both great forums. However, BITOG is the more active faster pace forum where I get replies-answers quicker. So if time is a factor, BITOG is the fastest car advice forum. I also belong to 2 Buick forums, but they move at a glacial pace (typically a week to get a reply to any question). I could get faster response from paper mail than from the Buick forums.

I'm a member there, but not at all a fan. I think in a post some time ago I replied to one of your posts pleading with you not to bring any of them here. Jokingly of course. What you get there are a large cross section of posts clogging up the forums by bunch of boomers with a problem that brought them there, with a screen name like 'LarryAndBarb2014CRV' or something in that format. Then they abandon it after 15 or so posts.

It's possible we might have crossed paths at crvownersclub.com. I don't recall. I have a different screen name there. Is your screenname there same or different as at BITOG?

I did cross paths at crvownersclub.com with @Sequoiasoon who uses the same screen name at both forums. He recognized me there by my content and writing style.

I agree with you that are a lot of folks at crvownersclub.com who have no mechanical, oil, or filter knowledge and recite the mantra of only using dealership Honda OE parts, oils, & filters. Many of them also say they would only let a dealership maintain or repair their Honda.

However, that ^ promotes me to DIY demi-god status over there and Sequoiasoon is a full fledged DIY god over there. So I'm OK with that. 🤣

There are also some very knowledgeable DIY guys at crvownersclub.com who know a lot more than I do. Sequoiasoon and Bradley David Good are among my favorite experts there.

Both BITOG and crvownersclub.com forums have been very useful to me and most members very good to me. The same applies to the two Buick forums I belong to, but I wish the Buick forums were more active.

But there are also a lot of knowledgable, smart DIY guys there too. Sequoiasoon and Bradley David Good among my favorites there.
My screen name is RiverRockG19 there. I was heavily involved in the VTC actuator rattle thread.

Thanks but nowhere near any deity status. More like Water Boy….Momma Says.

I’m pretty good at searching and learning everywhere and then being able to recall and share. I have my own experiences over the years, things I did wrong, do as I say not as I do. Experience is great as it lets you recognize what you screwed up when you do it again.

I’m same name on at least a dozen forums. Some with very minimal posts but signed up for reading and some questions/help needed. When I have issues with my vehicles I get more active on them as I’ll share what I know while searching for other stuff. I was brought up helping others, learning from and teaching at same time.

Currently BITOG, DriveAccord, Piloteers are my main ones. CRV Owners Club some, Hyundai-Forums, Forte-Forums, JeepRenegadeForum at times depending issues. BITOG is my main because of many like minded DIY members, good moderators, broad variety of things that are also my interests.

I think original checking if it was @Carlostrece was from writing but also the same avatar at the time of the land yacht Buick Or Town Car

Just wondering if anyone has installed a larger battery in a Honda HRV...I have a 2021 and it has a 51R.....Not much room in the battery area to work with....
