Had to get a new over/stove/range (what do people call these ??) and there is this piece of sheet metal that looks functional but no idea what it's for. Instructions don't refer to it either, that I see. Will double-check.... It's hooked on the same piece of firm cardboard corner protection that is used inside the cardboard box to protect the (4) corners/edges. Any ideas ? It's a Samsung, FWIW.

Looks like some sort of a trim kit.
It looks too well made to not be something like that. It would have to be on the back side (non-visible side) though as it's just galvanized-like sheet metal. Everything on the visible parts are nice, shiny stainless.

The dimples make it look like it's made to hold along with the arrows indicating for lining up with something (there's (3) arrows, evenly spaced).

From working apartment maintenance and installing microwaves it looks like a block off tab. Some ranges vent out the front but have a block off plate to allow ventilation on top if its set up correctly.

Looks like it could be packing material to prevent damage or strengthen the carton to minimize damage during handling and shipping.
The carton had about (4) simpler, folded cardboard corner protectors along with (4) more that were a combination of the same protectors but embedded in styrofoam. The fact that this one has dimples (as if to help hold it in place) and line-up arrows makes me think it's a trim piece.

Looking at the installation instructions again, I did find this:

You must use the rear filler kit to install the range in a freestanding cutout cabinet. For more information, see “Optional rear filler kit” as shown below.
Thing is, there's nothing "as shown below" nor any pictures of this 'kit'. Googling that description, with "Samsung", only turns up plates that are shown on range tops.

My other guess is it's a filler piece to support the counter portion that would run behind the stove in an island setup. Is it slightly longer than the width of the stove?

Yes, it's maybe 2" wider. I'm pretty sure it goes behind the stove in an island setup too, but ours isn't that type so it must not be needed in our case.

its packaging material there's no way a combustible material would be used as a counter filler.
Almost all kitchen cabinet boxes are made of plywood. The piece appears to be sheet metal and MDF to bridge the rear opening of the back of the stove in an island placement in order to support whatever countertop material is used.
