Living in the desert, I was hoping the drywall patch material hadn't dried out since I last used this material a year ago.

When I opened the container I got quite the unexpected surprise.

Is it moldy?

I was expecting a different kind of growth.... Like maybe it had expended or fluffed up in the container.

Yep, I've seen that here in FL, black mold. Not a big issue to me. I normally just scape off the top and throw that part away. I use the rest. If the rest seems a little dry, just take out a small amount and mix with a few drops of water. Perfectly usable.
Of course, if you are horrified by the idea of black mold, just throw it away, it's pretty cheap.

Just like plastic pipe cement. Once you open it the death clock starts running.

One thing my dad taught me - if you ever find a spackling bucket with a lid on it at a jobsite that doesn't have working toilets DO NOT TAKE THE LID OFF OF IT!
