Ultra - So what happened?

Well, for the 1000th time, I'm really curious if this oil will show up in Canada, considering all the problems it is having down there.

My WM didn't get the message. There's still lots of dusty Ultra on the shelves at $25. If it drops to $15 I'll spring for a few jugs of 5w-20 and 5w-30.

Yeah, it appears to have went from PU to PPPPPUUUU.

(Just kidding folks)

I was planning on using it at next oil change, but I suppose now it'll be PP unless PU is still available then.

Addyguy, I saw in a francophone car Tv show (the only one we have), that Pennzoil held a press conference, few weeks ago, announcing that Pennzoil Ultra will be available in October in Canada.

Edit: Was announced during the F1 Grand Prix apparently, but since the auto show is on rest in summer, that is why I heard about it only this weekend.

Pennzoil PR people are really not that good, I never heard of it during the F1 GP period.

Their 'plan' is to have it available in Canada.....but their 'plan' was also to have it sell well through WM - see what I'm saying....?

I'm starting to doubt their 'plan' is going to turn into a 'reality'.....

My opinion, this was the big marketing mistake. If they had brought in Ultra in 0W20 and 0W30, it would have done more to differentiate the product. It also would have opened it up to a lot of Honda and Toyota guys paranoid about their warranty.

The local WM near me seems to go through quite a bit of M1 0W20, since it's the only oil in that weight that it stocks.

On a visit to my local WM yesterday I was looking forward to trying some Mobil 1 EP in 5w-20. They didn't have any on the shelf in a 5 qt. jug so I opted to get my previous fill (Ultra). They had the Ultra on the end of the isle on sale for $25 for the 5 qt. container.
I think if the Ultra is a better oil than PP, then perhaps they should just get rid of it and only market the Ultra. Maybe if they got rid of the PP and changed over to just producing the Ultra they could also reduce the price of it.....and incorporate a 0w as well. This way you could satisfy the cost conscious as well as attracting a larger customer base with the 0 weights.

At its current price point, I am satisfied with PP, and would not spend any extra for ultra. If that's also the mainstream thinking, then that would account for the lack of sales we are hearing about.

PU as 0w oils would have REALLY been a good idea, inc 0w-40 which would have actually competed w/M1. 0w would have distinguished PU from PP and make the customer aware it is a premium product. I think savy customers are not afraid of 0w and are actually looking for something different, something better or whatever.

I bought 2 jugs of PU today.

But how many of them shop at WM

j/k - most of my oil comes from the oil paradise that is composed of our 3 local WMs.

Certain AAP stores carry 0W20, 5W20, 5W30, and I believe 10W30 Edge. Others only carry 5W20 and 5W30. I go to the store that carries all 4 grades when they have their oil change specials. Last time I grabbed 5 qts 0W20 Edge and a Bosch Distance plus filter for $29.99. I loaded up for 2 oil changes for 2 vehicles. I haven't seen it in any thing but qts. I will only buy it when on sale, or take advantage of specials AAP offers like the $10 off $25 coupons, I was using them to stock up as well.

My PB doesn't carry Edge 0W20. The 0W20 grades are still hit or miss in most stores I shop at.

That is EXACTLY the only reason I go to my local WalMart....nothing else.

It is my main reason for going most of the time. Though on any WM trip I check the oil aisle to see what the rollback of the day is. It varies here even among our 3 local WMs.

They already have a product that competes with M1 0w-40. It's called PUE 5w-40. It meets all the same specs. Alas, SOPUS will never make a dent in M1 0w-40's market share if PUE 5w-40 is not placed on a store shelf right next to it.

I went to my local WM today to try and get Ultra in 5w-20 but the display was gone. I went down the oil aisle and I did manage to find two jugs of 5w-20 and six quart-bottles of the same grade. On the bottom shelf was one jug of 5w-30. I bought a jug of 5w-20 and an extra quart of 5w-20 since my Ford Escape takes six quarts with filter. I still had to pay $25 for the jug though.

all of my local walmarts (and there are a few of them within a short drive) still have plenty of ultra. i am just unwilling to pay such a dear price for oil. if there is ever a big sale or rebate, i will try it out.

I still think it's a mistake to not offer a 15k mile guarantee. Only they know how well it's selling though.
