The first filter was used on a 1997 Saturn SL1 SOHC for about 3,000 miles over the course of 12 months. Oil was Havoline High Mileage.

Here's the second filter. It was used on a 2002 Ford Windstar 3.8L for about 5,000 miles over the course of 9 months. Oil was Castrol GTX Magnatec.

Tear0later. I don't see it here.

This FL400S is not one that has the issue with tearing...

The 820 has that covered quite well

The filter from the Saturn was made 9/25/2018, and the one from the Ford was made 12/21/2018.

The FL-820 is definitely NOT the best made filter. The FL-400 is probably fine....

Not any more. A while back maybe when we thought it was going to be a rational discussion. Now it is a realization of something completely different.

I use the MC 910 filter on my Craftsman rider, but I also have used the 910 on my Fords for around 300K with very fine service. In fact of all the filters available I choose the 910 as my go to filter. I have had less than good service with other brands, including the M1 cartridge for my 2007 Fusion. Now the 820 is another story.

Longtime fan of this particular Motorcraft. I kinda got away from them though when Fram went to a silicon ADBV on the orange can.

The FL-400s, FL-500s, and FL-910s have typically been tear free. The same cannot be said for the FL-820s and something definitely changed in those filters. Back in 2011ish, I ran a couple of them for 10K miles with no issues, I would not dream of doing that today or even using Motorcraft filters at all. Far too many filters that are as efficient for the same or less cost to risk media issues.

Yeah, most people are way beyond believing that they are "still the best" ... or ever were "the best" to start with.
