Truck Gas Mileage

2017 RAM 4wd Crew Cab Dually with HO Cummins, Aisin trans, 4.10 gears. Towing the 48' 5th wheel toy hauler, the combination is about 36k+ lbs GCVW. It does generally 8-9 MPG, usually running about 65 mph on interstates. Just towed 1500 or so miles home yesterday and today. Tows great.

Not towing, it does better. But it's main job is to tow.

My f-250 gets 12.5 average with its 460. I only use it for truck kinda stuff and driving in the snow here and there.

My 06 F-150 with the V-6 gets an average of 17. If all the stars are aligned it can touch 18, but never better.

I just took the 2020 Ram hemi out for lunch today.. since my jeep had a trailer full of scrap on it.

I wouldnt care what gas milage I was getting that hemi just moves doesnt matter if its 1500rpm or what.. esp. attached to the responsive zf-8 speed.

FWIW its lifetime is around 17mpg but its driven with extreme leadfood(not by me). I only drive it about 1% of the time.

I really like the jeep but between the mild turbo lag and the not so responsive zf-9 speed there can be a lag before power.. that hemi moves instantly if you step on it.

2019 Ram 1500 Classic crew cab with 3.21 gears. Dash is saying 18.5-19mpg, which means 17.5-18mpg for my day to day driving. Seen 21-22 on the highway.

Man, I thought my V6 was knocking down some great gas mileage. I see some great gas mileage from bigger engines, and heavier trucks. Y'all don't play fair. :cautious:
Seems the smaller engines have to work a little harder to move the same big truck down the road, and that fuel economy isn't all that much better.

But where you save money is on the original purchase price if you don't need a big engine.

2008 Ford F150 4.6, been tracking it consistently for almost two years, and averaging 18.3. Best mpg on a single tank was 20.1.

2018 F-150 3.3L na V-6. Lifetime avg 21.7 mpg. Best tank 26.8 worst 18.1. All were hand calculated.

So much variability that drawing conclusions is not easy. Some datapoints on trucks I drive regularly:

16 F150 : Average 17.6 MPG lifetime
18 F150 : Average 21.2 MPG Lifetime
17 F150: Average 13.9 MPG Lifetime
19 F250: Average 15.4 MPG Lifetime
20 F250: Average 14.1 MPG Lifetime
20 F250: Average 12.2 MPG Lifetime

All over the map. Fill in some details:
16 F150: Supercrew 4x4 XLT with the 2.7 Ecoboost nearly fully loaded for XLT, daily driver 60% freeway and tows about 10% of its life
18 F150: Supercab 4x2 XL truck with the base V6. Mostly highway miles. No towing.
17F150: Supercab 4x2 XL truck with the base V6. 4:1 ratio of idling miles to driving miles.
19 F250: Supercab 4x2 XL Truck with the 6.2 V8. Mostly highway miles hauling air.
20 F250: Supercab 4x2 XL Truck with the 6.2 V8. Mostly highway miles hauling air.
20 F250: Supercab 4x2 XL Truck with the 6.2 V8. Idles more than the other two.

And I forgot to mention 5 of them are supposed to use E85 when available, which ends up being 50% of the time...

Not many conclusions to be drawn without filtering things out...

2016 Ram 2500 Diesel Crew Cab 4x4 Long Bed. Just did a 1400 mile round trip from CA to ID and back. Had 1000lbs of ATV and gear in the bed.

Lie o meter says I averaged 20.1 mpg for the whole trip. I'm betting it was more in the 18 to 19 range. Most of the trip was at 70 to 80 mph.

Mixed driving around town I get between 15.5 and 16mpg in my Tundra. On long highway trips I can get as much as 18mpg but this is typically with the truck loaded with stuff, family, and >75mph.

I feel bad for anyone with a long commute driving a pickup
I drive 8 miles each way to work on easy back roads plus the usual running around and driving kids places - that is the only reason I considered getting a truck. I can go +400 miles on a tank and only fill up about twice per month. I do about 10k per year.

In 2009 things were slow at the fab shop. My son and I had to go work in the field at a prison job my company was doing. It was 62 miles one way. The first 4 months I was able to drive my company truck. The last 2 months, mine (6 months at this job).
I was happy to be back at the fab shop with my company truck.

2015 f150 @Supercab 2 wheel drive 3.32 rear end I have been getting 22 to 24 mpgs with the driving I do and I have gotten 26 mpgs a few times driving 60 to 65 miles per hour on level highway . All Mpg calculations are by doing the math.

The 2018 F350 x cab 4X4 with the 6.2 gas engine is not so good in comparison considering it weighs close to 2,000 lbs more and usually pulls a 7,500 trailer. The wife says the with the dash readout gets between 9mpg and almost 14 Mpgs . [with its use.] The P/U has never been on a free way trip with out the trailer.
