Shopping used 5 speed transmission for 2013 Fiesta. Some want a core charge. Used for my car is $500 to $2000 with up to $1000 core charge if I keep mine. Scrap transmission prices typically range between $0.10 and $0.30 per pound. That's $10 to $120 per transmission. , So why such high core charge? Maybe they are breaking them down so they can sell the different metal parts and get a higher price? I can understand a rebuilder wanting the core back so he can build another one.

You are correct. There is no reason for a junkyard to charge a core charge
I think some places use it to make $$$. Fail to return the core and it's a cash windfall for them.
Most salvage yards sell those to core buyers that sell them to rebuilders
They wouldn't be interested in same metal scrap having the same weight. They want a rebuild-able core.
Core & scrap are 2 different things, Whether the core is actually worth the core charge varies, Buildable 6L80, 6L90, 4L65, 4L80, 10L80, 6R80, 6R140, 10R80, Allison 1000, 48RE, 68RFE cores are worth good money.
Thetes a place I think in northern Arizona that only deals in manual transmissions. They seem to have everything you could need. I'll have to ask my dad what the place is called.
