I looked around and I couldnt find any info about this.
My timing chain is rattling upon startup and after asking a few folks it seems they feel the tensioner is stuck because of lack of oil flow. One of the old mechanics said I should run 4 qts of oil and one qt of ATF in there for about 100-150 miles then get an oil change.
I just got this car earlier this week. Its a 04 Grand Marquis with 200K miles on her.
Now that I put a new filter and and put the trans & oil in, she is a LOT quieter. Also to be noted, the oil was clean when I bought it and when it was drained.

Whats everyones opinion?

I would use 20% MMO for example if you car calls for 5 quarts of oil, use 4 quarts of oil and 1 quart of MMO.

I would not use ATF in the crankcase!

Back in the 50's when engine oil had little or no detergents a qt of ATF added to the oil may clean things up some. Todays oils have much more detergents than ATF ever did.

Adding ATF to oil today just thins the oil and dilutes the add pack. Better off using a specialized addative such as MMO, Seafoam or whatever else is out there.

You thought Sea Foam would take too long, compared to ATF? MMO is Marvel Mystery Oil, and while I don't think it would hurt anything, I'm generally against additives. I'm all for putting only motor oil in my motor. With regular changes, the additives will clean things up.

Well how long should I drive around with the ATF in there? And whats up with that Motor Rx? (is that is what its called?)
MMO huh? what does it do?
OHHHHHH!!!!!!
And whats up with Lucas? Some mechanic RAVED about it!

It's a Modular. It doesn't need weird additives or ATF in the oil. It needs regular maintenance and pretty much nothing else. A good oil like Mobil 1, PP, PU, or even a 5w20 conventional would be just fine run at sane intervals with a Motorcraft filter.

Don't use Lucas (thickening agent), ATF (it should be in your transmission, not your engine) or anything else in that engine.

Do you think its..... overkill?

In any case I need to clean out the engine. Whats the best thing to clean the engine over a few hundred miles?

Redline or Mobil 1.

Cut open your filters. I'd try Mobil 1 AFE 0w20 or 0w30 in it. That'll be your least expensive route.

Why would I cut open my filter?

Also I live in a apartment complex so I have no tools for that.

Im at the point I want to sell this [censored] thing! I just dont know WHAT to do.

The filter cutting is how you see what is cleaned up in the engine. I just use a sawsall.

If you can't cut 'em, don't worry about it. Just use what I suggested.

MMO mentioned above. It helped my wife's Jetta that was noisey. Don't expect things to happen over night. May take a few oil changes.

Simply put Transmission fluid is for transmissions. In the 50's and 60's it might have done some cleaning, when added as you've done. There are better products for cleaning an engine, like Kreen and MMO. Go to the oil additive section and read up on Kreen and MMO, that should give you all the info you need to get the job done. Good luck!

No need for all that if you engine is dirty the best and safest way is to change the oil every 500 or so miles until the engine becomes clean or at least decently clean. Putting to high solvency liquids in an engine can cause major problems down the road especially trying to get 100 pounds of [censored] out of a 10 pound bag overnight not gonna happen. If you really want to clean it good pull the oil pan and valve covers and clean those with brake clean or something really strong but, other than that your playing with fire depending on the neglect of your engine.

Canadian Tire used to carry it. Some stores will still have it and you can get it on clearance, since they aren't going to carry it anymore. I picked up 24L of it.
