Noticed that the 06 Volvo V70R (with 262.9K miles) was dripping oil, so decided to investigate. Turns out that oil filter housing (cartridge filter type) was leaking slightly. That’s not so unusual if the O-ring is not changed out with each oil change. However, this one was changed last oil change, so may have been a defective O-ring or something else. In any event, what was in there was a Dynalube D5315 filter (a Rock Auto Wholesale closeout listed as an Ultra Power). Got a couple of those awhile back out of curiousity along with a few Carquest 84021 that were likewise a RA Wholesale closeout under the Ultra Power brand. I like the Carquest filters much better, by the way...made in Poland, very nicely assembled. Dynalube (made in China) was not a terrible filter, but i was suspicious that it might be a bit restrictive for cold starts and cold conditions, especially since car has 10W-30 Pennzoil Platinum in there right now. In a normal year the oil would get changed 4X per year and there would be either 0W-40 or 5W-30 Synthetic in there for the cold season along with a Mahle filter. So i was planning to change the filter anyway.
So it looks like the Dynalube was a bit restrictive given how squirmed the pleats look. Have seen filter pleat squirming before with restrictive filters run during cold weather. Installed the new Mahle filter along with about 8 oz of 0W-20 Pennzoil Platinum to slightly reduce the viscosity of the other 5 qts of 10W-30 in there. The Volvo will be much happier with the Mahle filter in there (OEM filter for this Volvo). Could the extra pressure in the filter housing due to the more restrictive Dynalube filter media have exacerbated the o-ring leak?
Old Dynalube on left (out), New Mahle in the filter housing on right going in...and the rust free underside of the Volvo....enjoy the pics.
