Apparently they do, that's the point

I am not sure why the new corolla gets worse gas mileage than the current generation.

Ditto... 35 MPG highway with the small engine is just plain poor. They should be ashamed.

Don't forget that they use a new formula for figuring average fuel mileage this year. The 2008 Honda Civic gives 34 mpg with the 5 speed manual, and 36 mpg with the 5 speed automatic. Corolla, at 35 mpg, seems to be very competitive.

I have an 08 corolla and do like the new design. I miss my V6 power but overall I like my little corolla. Reliable, economical, will last a very long time IF properly maintained.
-There are thousands of corollas running around. I guess I am one of those that like boring good gas mileage cars. Not many subarus running about that i can see.....

Revised NHTSA standards?

The standards applied the current model are the same standards applied to the 2009 model unless a second standard was announced in the past two years of which I am unaware.

I think the designers at Toyota needs to be hit on the head. Although it looks a lot better than the current Corolla, the new one still doesn't look good. It actually looks really close to the Elantra. Anybody thinks so or is it just me?

I agree with you. On top of that, why don't they get their act together and make a sports coupe/car? Toyota is becoming so boring.

A car is meant to fulfill the role of a horse, which is to get you from A to B. This task lacks the binary property of being boring or exciting. As a consequence, how can it be boring?

Congratulations, you are more likely to have a bank account while others are in debt.

That seems to be in line with other cars of like weight/HP. Nearly identical to 08:
08's are rated at:
28/37 stick
26/35 auto

I believe the Toyota Corolla is the best selling car of all time worldwide. Some people just like to get from point A to B, then to points CDEFGHIJKLMNOP without thinking about it, for 200,000 miles with minimal maintenance or breakdown.

That's why I drive one.

42 mpg highway is sure a plus as well.

But yea, the new one looks blaaaaaaaaaaah. I think the best looking years were I believe 2000-2002. No funky looking headlights.

Why are cars designed more and more to look like spaceships?

I assume you are speaking only for yourself, although you didn't say that explicitly, when you defined the purpose of a car. For many others, it's more than a motorized horse.

Others (from C&D online):
2009 Toyota Corolla is the tenth generation, which at 30 million units sold in 40 years, is the best-selling passenger car in history.

Why would they reduce gas mileage from the current model??? That was my biggest selling point on the car. My fathers corolla gets close to 40mpg highway now its rated at 35 bah...

From those pics, I think the new Corolla looks better than the previous one, but the new Matrix is ugly. If they change those bumpers so they're more rounded on the bottom - instead of looking like the aftermarket bumpers that a confused 16-year-old would put on his '91 Civic - it could maybe look alright.

Why isn't the fact that the EPA changed the way that it arrives at its estimates sinking in here???? It's been stated over and over. You can not directly compare these new EPA estimated mileage figures to those of a few years ago.

The new Corolla has more power and is likely to get the same or better gas mileage than the current model, despite the fact that the new EPA method generally results in lower MPG ratings.

I wouldn't rely on the EPA estimates too hard. For example, the "updated" EPA estimate on my 1995 Acura Integra LS is 21/28. I get 28 driving hard in the city. I get over 33 on the highway, even with the air conditioning on and a full load of luggage in the car.
