Well, I learned something today. I thought I had read they licensed the technology. What I learned was they developed a system so similar to Toyota's that they entered into a patent sharing agreement where Ford licensed Toyota's patent and Toyota licensed Ford's patents on some diesel technology.

Seems Ford and Toyota came up with essentially the same system, but Toyota was first to patent it.

The only licensee using Toyota's HSD technology that I'm aware of is Nissan, in the Altima hybrid.

As it stands today, the only hybrids I'd consider (if I were to ever consider one, which I wouldn't, because they're economically impractical, slow, and boring) are the Toyota and the Ford. And I certainly wouldn't buy the Toyota, because Toyota irritates the [censored] out of me. So it looks like I'd have the Ford.

I'm sure the toyota folks will say something like there is magic japanese rubber in the frames of the tundra that make it more durable than those [censored] AMERICAN trucks, but what that video shows me is that while toyota finally made a truck on an AMERICAN scale, as far as size, and while they put some little hot rod engine in there, they have some work to do on the rest of the truck. Especially in the torsional ridgity of the frame. And whats up with the interior of that tundra? It looks like two guys (who were drunk) designed the dash on that thing. That has to be the goofyist looking instrument panel I've ever seen.

I'll give the toyota credit for having a hot rod engine. But my whole point is that there are better trucks, from GM, Ford, and Dodge that are made by AMERICAN companies. Buy American. It'll make you toyota guys loosen up a little and feel better about your buying decisions. (and you'll be supporting the country that you call home)


I really don't care how fast my truck is empty; all that does not excite me. Well, maybe once in a great while to blow away that hemi or titan. But what i use my truck for 90% of the time is towing trailers.
That video has nothing to do with loading our trucks whatsoever. Just so you know, all real trucks bounce a little. So this is just another desperate attempt by the big 3 to reduce their market share losses to Toyota. Plain and simple my friend. Pretty cheap [censored] marketing efforts on their part, i'd say. Couldn't find anything else in their 80's stlye drivetrains, so they got to play their own little games. Pathetic.

As far as rigidity in the frame, i think you need to do a little more research. What type of frame is on big tractor trailers? They are C-channel. Why? because they are less likely to brake when loaded heavy. They have more room to flex, whereas a full boxed frame (ford) is more likely to break when loaded heavy.
So, which one is better? i'd say C channel which is what's on the tundra. Under the cab it is reinforced C-channel, and in front of the cab it is fully boxed for better crash protection.

I'm not super happy with the interior, but i'm certainly not dissapointed with it. I think toyota could have spent more time designing it, but most of their efforts were focused on the drivetrain. Of which, they did a fine job. Much more technologically advanced than the big 3 counterparts.

Better trucks from GM, Ford, Or Dodge? I wonder why they can't compete then? Still the old style push rod motors with almost the same HP numbers they've had for years. Especially the 5.4 triton v-8 POS. Then the dreaded 4-speed transmissions, which are a joke when towing. GM has made an attempt here, but yet again they have failed. The 6.0 / 6speed combo has proven it cannot pull ANY slight incline in 6th gear.
So Why are they riding on old technology?
It all comes down to being able to AFFORD to gain new technology my friend, and none of the 3 seem to know how to. Or they think they don't need to, or both. Probably both.

Buy american...........get real.
They don't give me anything to feel better about spending my money on, that's for sure.

But does that ford have TC, BFD, VSC, All airbags, anti locks so it can possibly avoid an accident all together? Probably not. Thanks to these so called nannies, many tundra owners have avoided accidents because of them.

It's amazing the oil burners couldn't match the tundra while towing HALF of their max tow capacity. Kind of funny if you ask me. The tundra with 75% of it's capacity, and the oil burners at 50% and they couldn't out do the tundra....Wonder why?

There's the arguement of " well the diesel will outlast the gasser by a long ways". Will it though. From what i understand, the dummax is a 200k mile rebuild motor. So basically you'll need to rebuild it then. The dodge is supposedly a 4-500k rebuild motor. Don't remember on the powersuck.

If i actually HAD to have a diesel truck as of right now, it would be the dodge with the cummins pre 06. Hopefully it would have the Aisin transmission in it. But i don't tow cross country a lot, nor do i need to tow 16k+ either. Only need to tow 11k maximum, and that's only a few times a year. I mainly tow 7500 lbs during the summer, from may until october for an occasional weekend here and there.

Considering the higher fuel costs of diesel vs. gas, and higher maintenance cost, i think i'll stick with my gasser.


You cannot, with any respect to sanity draw any conclusions comparing the SPEED of a diesel and a gasser in towing. The Duramax has 200+lb-ft on the gasser in the Tundra, at HALF the RPM, over a MUCH flatter curve. It also has a big honkin' turbo.

It begs the same question as to why you never see a gasser pull as well as the diesels at the truck pulls.

I'm NOT a GM fan, but to compare the towing capacity of the Duramax to the gasser in the Tundra is silly. And drawing conclusions because the gasser was "faster" is even more ridiculous.

It is like me stating that the 5.4L in my Expedition is better than a C7 CAT engine because I can get to 60Mph with 7,000lbs behind it faster. Speed is not the reason Diesels are used for heavy towing.

Big honkin turbo? So what was it's problem then with only a 7500 lb trailer? With 200 ft/lbs more, you'd think it should have whooped the tundra but it didn't. Why's that?
It's out there for the long haul? I don't consider a 200k mile duramax overhaul schedule to be the long haul. Hundreds of toyota motors across the country are logging as many as 1 million miles on the original motor and trans. And they are gassers.

Who really cares about the truck pulls? All of those guys have money to burn on blown turbos, broken drivetrains, chips, propane injection, nitrous, just to name a few. IN the real world where reliability reigns, truck pulls are fairytale.

The point i've been trying to make is: Why can't a 600+ ft/lb turbo diesel motor outperform a small 401 ft/lb gasser W/O turbo or a supercharger? Especially while towing 7500 lbs?

It just don't make any sense to me.

And Toyota knows real trucks, which is why they had frame rot problems spanning more than a decade right?

They've been making "real" trucks for only a couple years. I cannot think of any truck from Toyota, used for real WORK produced during the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's, can you?

The argument that Toyota then knows more about making trucks is ridiculous. They copied the F-150 so blatantly it is hilarious. My uncle has a Tundra. It's like stepping into a Ford.

80's style drivetrains? Toyota didn't even HAVE a 1/2 ton drivetrain in the 80's! That's almost a compliment, given that EVERYTHING Toyota has learned in the truck market is what they've copied from the Big 3.

We are talking about 1/2-ton frames here, not something found in a Kenworth, which is REQUIRED to afford twist due to the sheer mass they pull and the several THOUSAND lb-ft of torque those huge diesels produce, something your 1/2 ton truck is NEVER in a million years going to come close to. Remember, Ford makes up the F-550, they know a thing or two about making trucks larger than a 1/2-ton, and have been doing so for much, MUCH longer. Way before Toyota started capitalizing on the domestic truck market. As have the other two.

Technologically advanced? In what ways? Please elaborate here. Is it the 381HP out of the overhead camshaft engine? Because that's not new technology. And Dodge is squeezing 390HP out of their 5.7L now.

1. The pushrods in that Dodge make more power and take up less space than the engine in the Tundra.

2. The 5.4L "POS" made 425HP in the Cobra-R, and they have TWO models making similar figures in Australia in the Falcon. Yes, out of less displacement than your Toyota. Also, the 5.4L/4.6L engines are also overhead cam, NOT pushrod.

3. The 4R100 is a very competent transmission, proven to handle ridiculous power levels. I have one in my Expedition.

So many things you've said in this post are so ridiculous it's not even worth arguing with you. But this is particularly off-the-wall. The point of a tall top gear is for economy under a no-load condition. When you start to climb a grade, it DOWNSHIFTS for power.

But I'm not surprised that you're looking for basically anything and everything to point out as a flaw. I'm sure if your Tundra had a tall 6th, you'd be bragging about how the GM truck is a gas guzzler that has a pointlessly powerful top gear and your marvelous, wonderful Toyota is the fuel economy star.

Please, spare us the [censored].

Because it's a DIESEL!!! My God man! They do not make the same sort of power curve as a gasser and a 300HP diesel WILL NOT accelerate as fast as a 300HP gasser. But it will tow more weight.

Try putting the 16K trailer on both, and see how much fun your truck has moving that. Or better yet, put 24K behind them both. That's where the diesel shines. Obviously something you, and whoever was doing this review missed out on.

Crown Vics in taxi service by far hold the largest percentage of high mileage gassers.

I don't know about the Duramax longevity, so I'm not going to comment on it. The Cummins ISB and International DT444 are both known to go well over 500K under severe service, something I doubt those 1 million mile Toyota vehicles you seem to think are everywhere, have likely ever seen.

As I said, double it. Triple it. That's where the diesel shines. It's not about getting there faster, it's getting there. Which is why they clean up at the truck pulls.

Consider this:

The two trucks who won the pulls this year were a stock F-250 and a Stock RAM 2500, both diesel. I'm not talking goofed up crazy trucks, both were daily drivers, the Ford being somebody's company work truck.

When you limit the ceiling to 7,500lbs, of course it isn't going to make sense to you. Toyota doesn't make anything bigger. The other three DO. You are comparing trucks designed to do two completely different tasks and basing this whole comparison on something the diesel could do in it's sleep but judging it based on it's SPEED, something diesels are NOT known for.

Because last time this discussion came up, we had easily verifiable examples of Ford, GM, and Volvo products going over 1 million miles on the original engine, but only unverifiable rumors of one Toyota doing so.

Surely, with there being hundreds of 1 million mile Toyotas out there, you should easily be able to provide us with several examples.

Or perhaps you've just been drinking too much of that rising-sun kool-aid.

Actually, the '07-up Tundra 6-speed has a taller final overdrive than the TorqueShift. So much for holding overdrive up a grade for 3Toiletas!

Never heard or read anything on frame rot. Wonder why i've never experienced that in over 20 years with toyota?

I think Hino has been around for a looooong time, which is owned by toyota. Matter of fact, the rear end in the tundra is made by Hino. Yeah, it's about as beefy as some 1 ton trucks.

When did i say toyota knows more about making trucks? I don't beleive i even said that. Copied the f-150. That was a good one.

Copied the big 3? Where did they do that? Standard 4-speed; NO.
Old style single overhead cam? NO. 3 stage fuel pump? 2 stage induction system? dual timing chains for intake AND exhaust gases?
Can't see where they copied them with the motor anywhere.

MY half ton is designed for what i need it to do, so that's all that matters to me. Toyota knows that it's what most people need their truck for as well; to tow 10k lbs or less. Most people don't need to tow 8-10 tons around.

If you do some more research with those engineers who know more than we do on frame strength, then you'd know that a c-channel frame is much less apt to break.

I'm talking about the POS 5.4L they're putting in the f-150's, and has nothing to do with the cobra.

I will have to say though, that Ford has more going for them now more than the other 2. They got wise just in the nick of time, and hired a big time money guy to shape things up for them.

I haven't forgotten anything. What you don't realize is that your truck isn't holding 6th gear up any sort of incline with a decent load on it.

1. The pushrods in that Dodge make more power and take up less space than the engine in the Tundra.

2. The 5.4L "POS" made 425HP in the Cobra-R, and they have TWO models making similar figures in Australia in the Falcon. Yes, out of less displacement than your Toyota. Also, the 5.4L/4.6L engines are also overhead cam, NOT pushrod.

3. The 4R100 is a very competent transmission, proven to handle ridiculous power levels. I have one in my Expedition.

HINO was founded in 1942. Another WWII gem like Mitsubishi. They joined Toyota in 1967. They produced Renault cars (under license from Renault) for sale in Japan for a number of years. They stopped making cars after they joined Toyota.

GM owned White, Chrysler owned Western Star, and Ford made their own large transports that are much larger than the small HINO "get arounds", but that make sense given the geographic differences between Japan and North America.

Ford was using DOHC in the 1950's! This is NOT new technology! The 427SOHC produced by Ford in 1964 made 657HP. What kind of technological marvels was Toyota churning out in the 60's?

The Modular motor is no less advanced than the Toyota engine, but has more than a decade more use behind it, MASSIVE fleet use in law enforcement and taxi service....etc.

It was available in DOHC AND SOHC configurations, and currently in an SOHC 3-valve. The use of SOHC in the trucks is for superior torque production according to Ford engineers.

For 2000, the Tundra's largest engine was a 245HP 4.7L V8 with 315lb-ft. That same year, Ford was fitting the Cobra R with a 425HP 5.4L, and making 320HP out of the 4.6L in the Cobra. That's because the Modular has more duties than just a single chassis..... Similar to how GM's LSx engines do duty in both their trucks and the Corvette......

I applaud Toyota's upgrade to the 381HP 5.7L, but the figures are not due to superior engineering; Ford was making more power with less displacement almost a decade ago using dual overhead cams on the 5.4L.

As far as two-stage induction, again, Ford has been using this since the early 90's. The Lincoln Mark VIII had it, as did the Cobra. Not a Toyota first. In fact it would look like they are just following Ford......

Ford isn't having frame breakage issues. I'm sure they employ quite a few engineers.

But it has everything to do with the Cobra. They are the exact same engine family. The Modular series. I can swap a 4.6L out of an '03 Cobra into an F-150, slap a set of twins on it and make 1,000HP on the stock guts. Can you do that with the Tundra?

The 5.4L is not a POS. I have one in my Expedition mated to a 4R100. It works very well, we've owned three of them.

I am driving what I want. I simply want to inject some reality here that the comparison being made is not a good one. You are comparing a gasser to a diesel and drawing conclusions. You cannot.

I'm awaiting Hurricane/BOSS. It should be an interesting twist to the current truck line-up.
 
When I used to do the car auction thing, it was routine to see big 3 diesels pulling a Take 3 or bigger, fully loaded with cars or trucks, and doing it with ease.

Comparing a Tundra to trucks like these is absurd. I expect a load that these work trucks pull routinely would literally tear a Tundra into two halves. A Tundra might be okay for pulling a boat, but I gave our old '97 4.6 Expedition to our daughter and son in law, and they use it to pull their boat. My son in law says the Expy with a 4 speed pulls better than their 2004(5?) 4Runner with the 5.7 that is being canonized here.

Don't know what this has to do with Toyota resale value, though. I would expect that the plunge in quality and relatively poor value for the money, especially used, are the chief drivers of that.

Having thought about it, I don't think their 4Runner has a 5.7. It may be something like a 4.7 V8.

The Hino factory that makes those Toyota light truck axles is out in east Arkansas. They have had to layoff about one third of the workforce because there is no demand for the axles - no one is buying the Toyota trucks.

The Big 3 have been making trucks for essentially as long as Toyota's been in business. The new Tundra seems like a capable truck for the tasks for which it's designed (I've got to agree though that that doesn't really include towing to compete with the domestic diesel 3/4 and 1 ton pickups). Toyota's going to have to work for years to fully prove themselves in the truck market just as the Big 3 have had to work for years to prove themselves in the small car market after they lost their reputation decades ago. That seems fair, doesn't it? Trucks are utility vehicles and brand loyalty in that type of market is commonly founded on years of proven service.

I realize I'm just rambling. Just seems like this "my truck is bigger than your truck" match is going nowhere.
