I've never said buying japanese (or german) makes one unpatriotic. I do however believe that making a concerted effort to buy American products, is a patriotic thing to do.

While I think everyone should drive whatever they want, I can't stand people basing those decisions on information that is false. Things like American cars are inferior in quality, if you want a fuel efficent car you have to buy a foreign one, if you want a car that lasts a long time you have to buy foreign. I hear those kinds of ignorant statements all the time. toyota has done it's best to perpetuate those ideas. They are false.

toyota has copied many American car designs for the vehicles they have now. They copied the F150 when they designed the tundra. The Tahoe/Suburban when they did the sequoia. And now since GM is coming out with the Volt, all of a sudden toyota is going to have a plug in hybrid by 2010. That's not innovation, that's copying other people's ingenuity.

The japanese and germans make a good car. But they're not superior to American cars. I've owned all of them and just like the Cadillac I just bought my wife. It's better in every respect than the 5 series BMW we had. Americans, for a very long time, have automatically attached a certain amount of sophistication to anything from europe. A label that many times is wrongly attached.

This has gotten far from the original topic which was toyota's resale value has dropped. I think there are many reasons it's fallen off and like I originally said I think it's mainly due to the economy being off. My sidenote was that toyotas are not all they're cracked up to be.

GM and Ford are doing quite well in the hybrid/alternative fuel areas. Ford's fusion hybrid is kicking the camry hybrid's tail. The Chevrolet Volt is going to change the entire market. toyota has already been trashing GM's technology that they're using in the Volt, because it's a serious threat to their prius. It's a threat because it's BETTER. you'd think with how environmentally friendly toyota is, they would want new and better ideas and technology (you know, for the good of the world). but instead, they're trying to discredit GM's use of lithium ion batteries in the Volt, mainly because they have a huge investment in the market of Nickel metal hydride batteries and they don't want to have to change technologies. I don't like toyota as a company.

The Big 3 are vital to this country as we know it. If they didn't make great cars and trucks...I wouldn't support them. But they make the best cars and trucks in the world and as corporations....they're on their way to becoming better.

Is the fusion even in the same class as the camry?

Environmentaly friendly? Who has more ULEV on the market? Who has more 5 star crash test vehicles out there? Who is making the 5 star safety seal standard on most of their vehicles, including trucks? Head and side curtain airbags, traction control, VSC, 4 wheel anti lock brakes, brake force distribution. If im not mistaken, Toyota has the 5 star safety items in their ENTIRE lineup now. Last i heard, it is optional on most GM'S.

So who's stepping up to the plate more as far as safety for it's CUSTOMER'S ( remember customer is #1)?

The IIHS site shows lots of Toyota vehicles with less than stellar crash test results if you look at years prior to '09. '09 seems to be the first year of standard side airbags, and '08 models without them, like the Corolla for example scored POOR on the side-impact test.

Rear impact head restraint is not to hot as well:

http://www.iihs.org/ratings/head_restraints/headrestraints.aspx?toyota

I guess i should have re-worded the phrase to " at or near the top of 5 star crash tests."

Don't remind me of the 08 corolla. I have one of those.
But for me it's a very good car for bombing around in the city. Gets great mileage, and it will last forever. We bought the best car for the money at the time for fuel economy purposes mainly. But it's always best to drive defensively, and i hope we don't get in an accident with it.

Ever heard of the Rav4 EV? It was the EV that Toyota produced to meet now defunct California ZEV emission requirements. It was inferior to the EV1 in basically every way. There was no technology advantage that Toyota had over GM at that time. The only reason they decided to scrap the EV1's was because they were leasing them at a huge profit loss, as was Toyota with the Rav4 EV. Neither company is interested in selling cars that don't make money.

The reason GM got itself into hot water was because they foolishly invested in big trucks and SUV's. And, I have to say, I don't blame them, up until very recently, they were a major cash cow. Toyota decided to invest in the smaller cars/electric cars first, which was a good call on their part, but they're hardly exempt from being guilty of chasing the buck. Ever seen the monstrosities they call the Tundra and the Sequoia? Toyota is green my [censored]. They had a better outlook and a better marketing department.

My problems with Toyota started when this screw GM attitude started. I love the way every media moron has praised Toyota for being this saint of a company. It's just not true.

The tundra and sequoia are ULEV's. (Ultra lo emission vehicles.)

Why did this screw GM attitude start anyway? I'd think they had it coming.

Toyota may not be a perfect company by any means, but they're a ways off from bankrupcy that's for sure.

You fellas need to face facts and stop talking about WHERE a vehicle was ASSEMBLED. I would love for every single part in my General Motors vehicles to be AMERICAN MADE. I'd love for every single car made by the BIG 3 to be ASSEMBLED in the USA. But they aren't. So I will take buying an AMERICAN vehicle that was ASSEMBLED in Mexico or Canada over buying some japanese vehicle that was ASSEMBLED in San Antonio. A tundra is a JAPANESE VEHICLE. Regardless of where it was ASSEMBLED. Sidenote: it's also ugly as sin.

The world isn't perfect, but you people trying to blurr the lines between what is AMERICAN and what is japanese need to realize that there is a reason toyota, honda, nissan, etc...will not move their headquarters to the United States. It's because they're JAPANESE. They love their country. They want those companies to be a part of the japanese economy and they want to support the japanese economy with their profits.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler are AMERICAN companies. They're headquartered in the USA. When you buy one of those awesome Ford, Chevy, or Dodge trucks....where do you think the bulk of that 40k you just dropped goes? To the guy who screwed it together? Heck no, it goes up to the Bob Lutz and Rick Wagoneer section of the company. That's great. I like those guys.

The money also goes to pay the retired GM, Ford, and Chrysler workers insurance, etc...Some of those guys spent 40-50 years working at those companies and living in this country...supporting this country.

You guys make this a tired argument. There is a difference between foreign and domestic. I don't give a turkey where you were born, what color you are, or what your ancestors look like. Toyota is japanese. General Motors is AMERICAN. If you want to buy one if those goofy tundra things and look like a jerk driving down the road....then take off there good buddy. But I think you should of bought an AMERICAN truck. and I'll keep trying educate goofballs everywhere about the fact that buying American is the way to go....

Those so called goofy little japanese trucks aren't so little anymore my friend.
My 6k lb DC is putting out sports car numbers performance wise, towing and empty. The closest truck in the shootout was your humble GM dummax 3/4 ton.
Try low 6 second 0-60 times; 130' 60-0 stopping distances, not to mention it's at the top for crash test ratings. The almighty oil burners couldn't even match the performance. Not only that, but the tundra got the best mpg in the testing. Go figure.
Some of these numbers are better than your average 2500lb sports car.

Those little goofy japanese trucks......give me a break.

don't forget that when you buy TOYOTA , SUBARU , and other foreign cars you're supporting the factories located here in the STATES which employ AMERICANS . Last , some foreign car manufcturers use as much as 50% of car parts made here in the STATES . This includes TOYOTA . So we need them as much as they need us . It's a small world after all .

What's wrong with it is that "all" of us are transplants from other regions of the world, especially if you subscribe to the theory that modern humans originated in Africa.

For the same reasons everyone else does..... We are no different.

Toyota quality is no better than GM or Ford anymore. Plus they are boring a sh*t vehicles. I think JD Powers would agree and the way behind Consumer Reports is finding out.

Buy the car you like, but remember that the quality is about the same so you should buy on other factors like FUN , mileage, looks, features, dollars, US built and US designed.

Your '07 Tundra? I assume you have the 381HP 5.7L V8?

Sports car performance numbers towing eh?

I assume we are talking JUST 0-60 and braking times here right? Given that you are comparing a 1/2-ton with 381HP/401lb-ft and a 10,800 pounds towing capacity to a 3/4-ton DIESEL pick-up with 360HP/600lb-ft and a 16,700lb towing capacity?

I believe we had a couple of trucks designed for performance. The F-150 Lightning and the RAM SRT/10 come to mind. When I'm towing my boat, I don't really care about how quickly my truck can get my boat to 60Mph.....

In regards to safety, according to the IIHS:

Tundra, 2007-2009:

Structure/Safety Cage: Good
Head/Neck: Acceptable
Chest: Good
Leg/foot, left: Acceptable
Leg/foot, right: Good
Restraint: Good

F-150, 2004-2008:

Structure/Safety Cage: Good
Head/Neck: Good
Chest: Good
Leg/foot, left: Good
Leg/foot, right: Good
Restraint: Good

The Ford did better than the Toyota. Therefore, technically, the F-150 was at the "top" for crash test ratings.

But has a 6,000lb towing capacity advantage, and 200+lb-ft of torque, available at a MUCH lower RPM. A diesel work truck is not designed to be the truck equivalent of the Corvette.....

The Dura-Ex-lax returned 14.2Mpg all in-town for the Consumer Guide review crew. The Toyota averaged 14.7Mpg. Not a big difference.

Actually, if Toyota builds such boring vehicles then why the loyal following? I can tell you after owning one Toyota for 18 years I still looked forward to driving it after those 18 years. My Tacoma is no different. The Tundra is new, and appears to be no different.

We have been attempting to buy GM and Ford products for many years, but the research and data will still not allow us to do it. However, to be fair we have been buying Ford stock for many months now. Anyone on here been doing that? All this chest thumping surely means many of you supporters are placing your cold hard cash were your mouth is, right?

As far as you are not American if you buy a Toyota, you have got to be kidding!

If we're not American, then let the monkey dictators choose the car of our fate that we shall own and fix forever.

*trying to break up all the seriousness here - this thread has derailed long time ago*

I still do not understand what is wrong with bringing up the "Native American Indian"?

Because it's trivially easy to extend that argument far enough that it becomes meaningless, is my take on the objection.

Because it's a pointless and frankly moronic argument. The point of buying American is to support "American" workers and taxpayers who live here, work here, (hopefully) buy American goods here, and pay taxes here. The descendancy of American Indians has nothing to do with the discussion at hand which is with regards to our economic posture.

This has nothing to do with ethnicity or descendancy. If you're Japanese and you live and work here (and in my perfect little world drive a Chevy) more power to you. But if you're "American" living and working in Japan, you're not my problem. I'd like to see this country take care of itself before we take care of everyone else, particularly those who aren't interested in being taken care of.

Yeah, the 5.7. It's in my sig.

Not sports car performance towing necessarily, but it did outperform all other's with 7200lbs behind.

It's amazing how they compared the tundra to the turbo diesels. But it faired very well in the testing, even while towing. This is extremely impressive to say the least. I mean a truck with more tow capacity and more torque by a long ways couldn't keep up with the new tundy.

Yeah, the lightning and the SRT 10 are slightly faster but not by a long ways from what i've read.
That's the thing with me too is, when i hook onto my fifth wheel and set the cruise at 70mph. I want to go 70 up or down hill, no matter how steep the hill. And this tundra has not let me down yet that way. Jeez, my dad's tundra tows a 9k lb 5er and he has no problem staying the speed he wants. NOt only does it do it without flinching, but it even manages between 9&11 mpg doing it.

My bad on the IIHS ratings. Should edit my post to read NEAR the top i guess. Looks like ford edged out the tundra in one category. But does that ford have TC, BFD, VSC, All airbags, anti locks so it can possibly avoid an accident all together? Probably not. Thanks to these so called nannies, many tundra owners have avoided accidents because of them.

It's amazing the oil burners couldn't match the tundra while towing HALF of their max tow capacity. Kind of funny if you ask me. The tundra with 75% of it's capacity, and the oil burners at 50% and they couldn't out do the tundra....Wonder why?

There's the arguement of " well the diesel will outlast the gasser by a long ways". Will it though. From what i understand, the dummax is a 200k mile rebuild motor. So basically you'll need to rebuild it then. The dodge is supposedly a 4-500k rebuild motor. Don't remember on the powersuck.

If i actually HAD to have a diesel truck as of right now, it would be the dodge with the cummins pre 06. Hopefully it would have the Aisin transmission in it. But i don't tow cross country a lot, nor do i need to tow 16k+ either. Only need to tow 11k maximum, and that's only a few times a year. I mainly tow 7500 lbs during the summer, from may until october for an occasional weekend here and there.

Considering the higher fuel costs of diesel vs. gas, and higher maintenance cost, i think i'll stick with my gasser.
