Toyota recalls will lower resale values

I am on a fixed budget (poor), so I will need to buy within my price range. That is why Toyota deprecation will work in my favor. I will be able to buy more car for the money. My Saturn came with power everything, cruise, remote start, and is easy to DYI. It was thousands less than a stripped down Corolla. Since I will be driving my Saturn until it is undrivable or too expensive to repair, trade in value is a moot point. I would buy my 99 SL2 over a Civic or Corolla of that generation. Transmission will does not grenade like a Civic. Corolla of that generation could be oil burners like a Saturn. Plus, Saturn dealership treated my right, unlike Toyota who seemed to be arrogant and snobbish. Oh, I am a man. I have a garage full off oil. If it were shoes instead of oil I would be a women. My Saturn has been a great car. I prefer it over newer Saturn models. It has been very reliable.

If toyota fixed the problems 100%, like a recall should, then this is ridiculous. Just an argument for someone to try to sneak a better deal without basis.

The rest of the car is the same anticipated quality, if the issue is fixed, the next owner has no claim or issue to these "issues".

You don't have to justify your car purchases to anyone. If you are happy with your cars, that is all that matters. Anything else just feeds the trolls. Ignore them.

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately Toyota (especially the US division) became much like Its domestic rivals when it came to profit vs integrity....

This is what happens when you put short term gains AHEAD of all other aspects of your company...a catastropic disaster!!!!!

I think that typical American "business culture" rotted the guts out of the US division just like it did with Chrysler, GM, and to a lesser extent Ford.

If all your organization focuses on is short term make a quick buck profits ANY company will eventually come to the same conclusion...It's equally amazing that all the brass tacks at these companies can't see it coming..Perhaps they do they just don't care as long as THEY get theirs and the fall out lands on their successor...

It's no "secret" that savvy Toyota buyers specifically asked for "J" vin cars when they were buying here in the USA...That was because it is still genenrally understood that the Japanese made product is superior to the same product made in the USA or elsewhere.

It's not unusual for investors to misjudge the reaction of the public in their reactions...This debacle is going to KILL Toyota's brand reputation even further....

This series of events definitely going to do huge damage to Toyota sales for quite some time to come. Serious damage!

Maybe not...

BUT Toyota's entire rep and brand identity is tied up in QUALITY and reliability, and that rep is seriously compromised now....This is the thing that Toyota has traded on for decades now, unlike GM,Ford, and Chrysler...the damage is done and it will cost them a huge amount of market share..I personally think it is going to be much worse than most think.

People being people, I can't think of a reason why the recalls wouldn't hurt resale value.

Nice houses in areas suffering social decay retain all of their intrinsic value, but suffer in price.

You don't quite understand human emotions -- since when did most people ever make logical decisions based on the facts?

Like never !! If people THINK Toyotas are unsafe or of inferior quality, it doesn't matter what Toyota does. That's the power of marketing or disinformation. Hitler said if you tell a lie long enough and loud enough it becomes truth.

Perception always trumps reality -- Remember the Audi "unintended acceleration" debacle? It took years and years for Audi to get over that, even though there was never a problem with the cars.

Alot of people I talk to, hate the attitude that many Toyota dealers have. Before many of these issues came up, the dealers were so arrogant about pricing or service, but consumers tolerated that attitude as long as they PERCIEVED Toyotas to be of superior quality. They could be smug in return to their neighbors and friends about how they were driving a TOYOTA which everyone "knew" to be the "best" cars on the road.

But when your friends and co-workers are laughing and making jokes about how "great" your Toyotas are since the recalls -- snugness doesn't have the same quality anymore.

Where I live, driving a Toyota Sequoia or Avalon was a status-symbol but no more. Now everyone is "high-siding" on those folks and they ain't likin' it.

Now, driving a Ford is looking good....

Yeah, but Hitler drove a VW.

The VW was a symbol of German unity; it was not a vehicle that any of the higher ups would have darkened the door of. It's inception was to provide an affordable vehicle to every German.

Most of status drove, or were driven in, as stated by the post that followed yours, Mercedes.

I hope resale values drop. My wife and I would like to pick up a late model Matrix if we can find one for a decent price.

The actual report says 1-3% at the wholesale auction for the recalled vehicles only. They also predict this trend will last through the recall period. So, if you want a deal on a Toyota you need to buy one of the recalled ones right now. I checked my 2008 4Runner residual value which is not a recalled vehicle...it has not moved at all. Neither has my 2008 Rav4 (not recalled).

The local TV crews were at several Toyota dealers the past couple of days from South Miami to North Broward County asking Toyota customers in the service department getting their cars repaired what they thought of Toyota handling the recalls...They all said they still love their Toyotas,Toyota responded in a timely manner,Toyota top dogs really care about saftey, this is a isolated incident and they all would definitely go out and buy another Toyota tomarrow.

I am amazed that those answers.

If you have never owned a Toyota...you wouldn't understand. The dealer I go to (A Penske Dealer) treats me like gold. If my car was one of the recalled ones...the salesman who sold me the car would be caling me to tell me. I have read some negative dealer reports from other Toyota owners...but not at my dealer. The service guys treat you really well. Always give a loaner car or drive you to work. Top notch service. The only other dealer that compared was a GMC dealer about 1 mile away that was closed by GM. That place was even better.
