It is a known fact the 6.0/6-speed combo CANNOT pull it's own weight in top gear. All you got to do is nose around over on the gm forums to know that. From what they say over there, with the cruise set on the freeway coming to a hill, the truck looses speed by 8-10 mph before it shifts down. Then it doesn't go to 5th like it should do, it goes strait to 4th. Usually they even have to punch the gas to get it to drop down. Note: these are the folks with 3.73 gears. The 4.10 guys are a little happier.
So GM did in fact screw up with the gearing for sure. Gee, toyota must have known something here to put in 4.30 gears. Wouldn't you say?
Matter of fact, they also say they're not happy with the mileage.

Yes, my tundra does get better hiway mpg than the 6.0 and some others. But it doesn't matter anyway.

Do your research before you call [censored] on me buddy.

He's not talking about lifting the truck; he's talking about putting the truck on a lift or hoist.

Actually, the '07-up Tundra 6-speed has a taller final overdrive than the TorqueShift. So much for holding overdrive up a grade for 3Toiletas!

What's nice is when i come to a hill at 70 mph, i have 2 other gears to pull me up the hill at the SAME speed. Depending on the hill, usually 4th does the trick.
 
Naturally you aren't interested in my links. After all, you might see something you don't like.

I definitely wouldn't click on the 2nd link if I were you, being that it is an actual, semi-relevant, scientific test.

Vehicle lifts are a fact of life in auto repair, if your truck ever visits the Toyota dealer you can bet it will see its time on a lift. Better hope that frame doesn't rust!

If you have a 6 speed, and it has a 6 speed, and you are dogging it because it won't pull weight up hill in top-gear, but then state you don't pull weight in top-gear either? It sounds like you are ripping on it for the sake of ripping on it, or making a point that doesn't exist here?

When my Expedition comes to a hill, it just unlocks the converter... if the hill is big enough and the cruise it on, it'll drop a gear, accelerate, then re-lock the converter. It doesn't appear to need more gears, in fact the combination of converter lock/unlock and its current gear selection seem to be more than adequate. The 6th gear in the current crop is for increased economy, not towing prowess.

Do you honestly think your Tundra will hold overdrive up a grade as well as a PSD?

Do you understand how a turbo works? Do you understand that it can build boost (and thus torque) independent of RPM?

I don't believe so. Otherwise we wouldn't be having a gas truck being compared to a diesel with almost twice the towing capacity.

They've been making "real" trucks for only a couple years. I cannot think of any truck from Toyota, used for real WORK produced during the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's, can you?

The argument that Toyota then knows more about making trucks is ridiculous. They copied the F-150 so blatantly it is hilarious. My uncle has a Tundra. It's like stepping into a Ford.

1. The pushrods in that Dodge make more power and take up less space than the engine in the Tundra.

2. The 5.4L "POS" made 425HP in the Cobra-R, and they have TWO models making similar figures in Australia in the Falcon. Yes, out of less displacement than your Toyota. Also, the 5.4L/4.6L engines are also overhead cam, NOT pushrod.

3. The 4R100 is a very competent transmission, proven to handle ridiculous power levels. I have one in my Expedition.

HINO was founded in 1942. Another WWII gem like Mitsubishi. They joined Toyota in 1967. They produced Renault cars (under license from Renault) for sale in Japan for a number of years. They stopped making cars after they joined Toyota.

GM owned White, Chrysler owned Western Star, and Ford made their own large transports that are much larger than the small HINO "get arounds", but that make sense given the geographic differences between Japan and North America.

Ford was using DOHC in the 1950's! This is NOT new technology! The 427SOHC produced by Ford in 1964 made 657HP. What kind of technological marvels was Toyota churning out in the 60's?

The Modular motor is no less advanced than the Toyota engine, but has more than a decade more use behind it, MASSIVE fleet use in law enforcement and taxi service....etc.

It was available in DOHC AND SOHC configurations, and currently in an SOHC 3-valve. The use of SOHC in the trucks is for superior torque production according to Ford engineers.

For 2000, the Tundra's largest engine was a 245HP 4.7L V8 with 315lb-ft. That same year, Ford was fitting the Cobra R with a 425HP 5.4L, and making 320HP out of the 4.6L in the Cobra. That's because the Modular has more duties than just a single chassis..... Similar to how GM's LSx engines do duty in both their trucks and the Corvette......

I applaud Toyota's upgrade to the 381HP 5.7L, but the figures are not due to superior engineering; Ford was making more power with less displacement almost a decade ago using dual overhead cams on the 5.4L.

As far as two-stage induction, again, Ford has been using this since the early 90's. The Lincoln Mark VIII had it, as did the Cobra. Not a Toyota first. In fact it would look like they are just following Ford......

But it has everything to do with the Cobra. They are the exact same engine family. The Modular series. I can swap a 4.6L out of an '03 Cobra into an F-150, slap a set of twins on it and make 1,000HP on the stock guts. Can you do that with the Tundra?

The 5.4L is not a POS. I have one in my Expedition mated to a 4R100. It works very well, we've owned three of them.

I am driving what I want. I simply want to inject some reality here that the comparison being made is not a good one. You are comparing a gasser to a diesel and drawing conclusions. You cannot.

I agree, the f150 is similiar in a few things. But definately not stock HP or TQ ratings with the 5.4L.
From what i have read, the stock 5.4L ford puts down 200 RWHP. What a joke, and a huge drivetrain loss.
The tundra puts down 300 RWHP, bone stock. 320 ft/lbs at 1500 rpms (crank). Yes, 1500 rpms. For a gasser that is impressive.


I guess if you say toyota's copying the big 3; i guess you're right then huh?

HP per Liter, toyota has always been impressive in STOCK motors. Usually in the 60's. This 5.7 is 66.84 HP per liter stock.

The hurricane boss will be interesting, if ford can get that power to the ground without huge drivetrain losses. But toyota will have D.I. up their sleeve then and it should get interesting. From what toyota execs. say, this 5.7 is capable of 500 hp with a few adjustments and direct injection. After all, this motor is a lexus design off of the 4.6L.

Don't know what this has to do with Toyota resale value, though. I would expect that the plunge in quality and relatively poor value for the money, especially used, are the chief drivers of that.

Having thought about it, I don't think their 4Runner has a 5.7. It may be something like a 4.7 V8.


Take 3 or bigger with a 3/4 ton? Wow, i'd say they're taking some risks there. NOt smart.

Why is it compared to the diesels then? Because the good ole big 3 didn't have anything at the time to compete.

Obviously, you don't know much about toyota products. The 4runner has the 4.7L v-8 which is not impressive towing IMO. I've had 3 vehicles with that motor, and the hp and tq curves are not impressive at all. It's a great proven motor, but lacks some power curve to it and it gets worse mpg than my 5.7.
I could never get better than 16 out of either rig i had with the 4.7. My 5.7 at 70 mph delivers 20 mpg. Over that speed, and it goes down.

5.4 exy pulls better than the 4runner. Of course it would handle it better because it's bigger and heavier. But i noticed you didn't say it had tremendous amounts of more power. WTH?
I'd bet the power is pretty close. But then again, the 4runner is AWD so you lose some power there.

In case you haven't noticed, ALL makes and models are tanking.

1. The pushrods in that Dodge make more power and take up less space than the engine in the Tundra.

2. The 5.4L "POS" made 425HP in the Cobra-R, and they have TWO models making similar figures in Australia in the Falcon. Yes, out of less displacement than your Toyota. Also, the 5.4L/4.6L engines are also overhead cam, NOT pushrod.

3. The 4R100 is a very competent transmission, proven to handle ridiculous power levels. I have one in my Expedition.

HINO was founded in 1942. Another WWII gem like Mitsubishi. They joined Toyota in 1967. They produced Renault cars (under license from Renault) for sale in Japan for a number of years. They stopped making cars after they joined Toyota.

GM owned White, Chrysler owned Western Star, and Ford made their own large transports that are much larger than the small HINO "get arounds", but that make sense given the geographic differences between Japan and North America.

Ford was using DOHC in the 1950's! This is NOT new technology! The 427SOHC produced by Ford in 1964 made 657HP. What kind of technological marvels was Toyota churning out in the 60's?

The Modular motor is no less advanced than the Toyota engine, but has more than a decade more use behind it, MASSIVE fleet use in law enforcement and taxi service....etc.

It was available in DOHC AND SOHC configurations, and currently in an SOHC 3-valve. The use of SOHC in the trucks is for superior torque production according to Ford engineers.

For 2000, the Tundra's largest engine was a 245HP 4.7L V8 with 315lb-ft. That same year, Ford was fitting the Cobra R with a 425HP 5.4L, and making 320HP out of the 4.6L in the Cobra. That's because the Modular has more duties than just a single chassis..... Similar to how GM's LSx engines do duty in both their trucks and the Corvette......

I applaud Toyota's upgrade to the 381HP 5.7L, but the figures are not due to superior engineering; Ford was making more power with less displacement almost a decade ago using dual overhead cams on the 5.4L.

As far as two-stage induction, again, Ford has been using this since the early 90's. The Lincoln Mark VIII had it, as did the Cobra. Not a Toyota first. In fact it would look like they are just following Ford......

But it has everything to do with the Cobra. They are the exact same engine family. The Modular series. I can swap a 4.6L out of an '03 Cobra into an F-150, slap a set of twins on it and make 1,000HP on the stock guts. Can you do that with the Tundra?

The 5.4L is not a POS. I have one in my Expedition mated to a 4R100. It works very well, we've owned three of them.

From what i have read, the stock 5.4L ford puts down 200 RWHP. What a joke, and a huge drivetrain loss.
The tundra puts down 300 RWHP, bone stock. 320 ft/lbs at 1500 rpms (crank). Yes, 1500 rpms. For a gasser that is impressive.

HP per Liter, toyota has always been impressive in STOCK motors. Usually in the 60's. This 5.7 is 66.84 HP per liter stock.

The hurricane boss will be interesting, if ford can get that power to the ground without huge drivetrain losses. But toyota will have D.I. up their sleeve then and it should get interesting. From what toyota execs. say, this 5.7 is capable of 500 hp with a few adjustments and direct injection. After all, this motor is a lexus design off of the 4.6L.





Which 5.4L is putting down 200RWHP? The 310HP one from the current F-150 or the previous gen 260HP one? Make sure you are checking the right engine. Interestingly there are MANY 4.6L Mustangs putting down 300HP to the tires with VERY slight mods from their 300HP 4.6L's.......

The current 5.4L makes 310HP, and 365lb-ft; 320HP and 390lb-ft on E-85. It also is mated to a 6-speed auto. And has an 11,300lb towing capacity. Hurricane/BOSS should mix it up a little, but we are not talking a huge torque difference, even given the .3L of displacement difference.

We don't race or tow with dyno's. My cam grinder's 'stang went 11.19 @ 120+Mph with a touch over 300RWHP. I've made your Tundra's RWHP numbers with stock junk on a 330,000Km 302, giving up .7L of displacement.

How a truck shows on a dyno has very little to do with how it is going to work in real life. A loose or unlocked converter has a massive effect on the dyno results.

Ultimately, I think the HP numbers are being read into far too much, and being used as a basis for "performance" here, which is why earlier, I brought up the SRT-10 and the Lightning. Obviously much more power has been done. Why it is not currently being done; why the 5.4L from the Falcon isn't in the F-150, well, I am sure there are reasons.
 
I didn't give them a 5.4 Expedition, I gave them a 4.6 Expedition.

I know the 4Runner 4.7 V8 has lousy towing capability - I was trying to be polite by saying the 4.6 Expy could easily out pull it.

You're right in that I don't know much about Toyota / Lexus cars because I have not been interested in purchasing one in the last two decades or so.

Well, maybe a Pontiac Vibe to haul the dogs to our lake home would be an exception. I am interested in one of those.

Maybe with resale values tanking I can get a deal on slightly used one.

But when i come to a steep hill, i put it in D mode so i gain WOT in gears 1-3. S mode i lose WOT, but it still holds gears longer. ???

Your expy does exactly what my 02 tundra 4-speed did when i come to a hill. First drop in speed, the TC would unlock, then drop if need be to 3rd TC unlocked then it would lock again until noticing less throttle response.
There is simply NO COMPARISON between a 4-speed and a 6-speed while towing. The difference is night and day. You no longer have just one gear on hills, you have 2 or 3. Not only that, but the rpm's are lower as well if you don't go too low on speed. 4th gear on my tundra at 70 is in the low 3000's. I think my 3rd gear in my old tundra was about the same (3000). Which is where i had to tow in (3rd).
So a 6-speed is a must have while towing from my experiences.

Do you honestly think your Tundra will hold overdrive up a grade as well as a PSD?

Do you understand how a turbo works? Do you understand that it can build boost (and thus torque) independent of RPM?

Empty on SOME hills, yes it would. Larger hills, probably not.

Pulling a trailer up a hill AND maintaining the set speed, my truck will drop a gear or 2 depending on the hill. Yes, sometimes it will be in 3rd at 70 and 4000+ rpm's. But the key is here, that it is in fact holding the set speed. It doesn't bother me at all for the motor to be turning that high of r's when it's pulling hard. Old school thinking, it doesn't hurt the motor doing this. It's when you're racing it with little to no coefficient drag or load on the motor is when it's not good.

I don't understand a lot about turbos. Just know they provide more power to an engine. That's what just blows me away.

Why can't i get an answer to why the TURBO diesels COULD NOT keep up with the NA 5.7 gasser?

They were brand new 07 trucks tested, so does it take a long time for diesels to get full hp tq numbers after break in?

But that's a different rear-gear combo than you have. With a similar rear-end ratio, is the behaviour not the same?

The 5R100 is fantastic (Super Duty) I've found for towing. The turbo with the diesel makes towing ridiculous. Got load? You've got boost! Full torque at ANY RPM.

I think that's the thing that isn't getting across here. 0-60 times and the like, compared to a truck that is close to 8,000lbs (Jon's duty is 7,986lbs on the truck scales) cannot convey they feeling of towing a LOT of weight with a diesel and how that turbo changes things.

The 7,500lb ceiling here should immediately exclude the diesel. It is a joke for those trucks, the F-250/350 'duty has an 18,700lb towing capacity, the 450 will tow 24,500lbs; that's your 5th wheel and entire truck twice.

Gas to gas, compare it to the HEMI if you want to talk E-wang/HP figures. 390 vs 381. But in the big scheme of things they are all capable. There's a reason the F-150 is STILL the best selling truck. If the Toyota was really as superior as this paper comparison portrays, do you think this would be the case?

Just to clarify: I'm not saying its a bad truck. I'm just saying I don't think it's as good as the argument presented is trying to convey. It has tough competition with companies that have had trucks as their bread and butter for decades.

Diesels are NOT FAST. That's the part you are COMPLETELY missing. Their forte is moving massive amounts of weight. When your gasser is screaming at 4K, the diesel is making 600+lb-ft via the help of that turbo at 1,500RPM.

The diesel has stopped making power when your gasser is just coming on. Most of them are done by 3,500RPM, some even lower. Since they lack a substantial RPM range, they are not FAST.

That is why this comparison is so goofy.
 
All i know is it was the 5.4L f150. I thought it was the 300 hp motor.

The boss hurricane will be interesting, that's for sure.

The LS 6.2 GM truck is VERY close, and just edjing the tundra slilghtly in all categories. Except towing up a hill; which the tundra just barely took it. Interestingly enough, the HP/TQ curves are so so close between the 2 it's crazy. Of course though, GM is dropping the ball again on this motor. It's only available in one model and not the entire lineup. I'm sure it's a cost thing.

Dino's really don't tell us all that much really, and real world is where the difference will be.
I know for a fact the 6.0L GM HD trucks with the 4-speed CANNOT compete with my truck. Not even close pulling trailers. My bro in law has an 05 slighlty lifted, with a chip and could not keep up with us on our trip last summer. And he was filling up more often than us, and we have about a 8 gallon smaller gas tank.
From Utah to disneyland is where we went. We set the cruise at 70, and never dropped speed on any hill. The 6.0 however, really struggled especially on the hills. He hated the fact it was always in second gear on the slightest incline screaming like a bugger.

There's some real world pulling for you.
 
Final drive may be similiar, i don't know. I compared the final drive ratio's and they're fairly close.

But it's not working out for the GM owners with 3.73 rear end gearing. Like i said though, the 4.10 guys are okay with things.
I beleive the toyota 4.30 adds a tremendous amount of torque and/or pulling power to the engine. I mean, don't the truckers have like 5.00 gearing or something like that? Yeah, not a comparison but still trying to make a point. Offroaders use mid to upper 4's i beleive.

I am leaning towards the 6.0 not having enough low end torque to pull much in the lower rpm range. And i would think it's due to the higher rear gear.

No comparison between a gasser and a diesel? From what everyone says, the diesel is THEE choice for towing prowess. Performance wise according to the tests, IMO they are not. At least for the most common under 10k lbs towing segment. But hey, i have not had the pleasure of being able to compare a real world towing performance test yet.
But i will very soon. My cousin has an 08 duramax, and he just got a big 5th wheel. So we shall see soon enough i guess.

If you haven't noticed already, i'm more performance minded when towing. When i come to a hill no matter how steep it is, i expect the truck to be able to do the speed limit or more. And i'm telling you, my tundra has not let me down yet. Even our 9k lb horsetrailer hasn't set me back on hills.


So what you're saying is; the real test between the 2 would be to max out each truck (tundra-10,300 and f250-18,700) and do a real world test? I am totally up for that, and i think it would be a fair test. It would surely be interesting....

I'm so impressed with the pulling power of this tundra, i have been aching to compare the differences climbing a hill with a diesel just for fun. My thinking is it would be very close.

Don't blow this out of proportion; i'm talking performance here. The diesel CANNOT be modded either, and 2007+.
