Hi,
Just got a 14 Nissan Pathfinder. It comes with the VQ35DE engine.

The dealership gave me 3 years of free oil changes every 5k miles. I talked to one of the service advisor today and asked what kind of oil they use. He told me it's a synthetic blend 5w30 that meets all of Nissan's requirements. He said it comes in bulk from a truck and he doesn't know what brand of oil it is.

This dealership advertises that it offers a lifetime warranty on new cars:

Unlimited time, Unlimited miles. Good anywhere in the U.S or Canada. This warranty is backed by Virginia Surety, (Founded in 1927) one of the largest automotive, recreational, appliance, home and commercial industries underwriters in the world. Drive worry free at no cost to you!

This "warranty" is free and it doesn't really take effect until the 60K Nissan powertrain warranty ends.

My concern is that to keep the warranty I have to have the vehicle serviced at any ASE certified shop and keep records. So I can't do my own oil changes. I usually like to run synthetic oil in my cars and the idea of using their unknown brand synthetic blend kinda scares me.

I could have the oil changed at another shop and just take a pass on their 36k of free oil changes. I hate the Idea of putting unknown oil in my new car, but maybe I'm being overly anal about it.

Thanks.

Enjoy those free oil changes. My friend has a Corolla which has free OC's for life. Every 5k, synthetic blend of unknown manufacturer. He has already pulled the valve cover 2x and it is clear of any sludge, etc. Plus, that engine is a tank so I would just take the free oil changes and save your money.

If you are super duper worried, get a UOA, before you take it in to drain it, get a pump and remove some from the sump.

Send it off and get UOA's done.

The price of a UOA would be less the price of a full synthetic oil and filter change.

Well... Same OCI and oil as he will get. Read thoroughly first and use the thing on your shoulders that God gave ya

Yup, read it thoroughly and the only mention of Toyota was in the thread title. It's Nissan everywhere else. Hence my question.

I've also read your post thoroughly and I have no idea what you're talking about either.

Yeah just realized I mucked up the title. It's a Nissan dealership doing the oil changes with unknown brand synthetic blend 5w30

The dealership gave me 3 years of free oil changes every 5k miles.

Just fine with any oil under normal/typical mix of local/highway miles.

That's kinda what I thought.

Thanks

5K free with any API SN and any filter is fine.
Don't even worry about it.
If the free extended service plan you got will really cover all of what you've listed without a lot of loopholes or hassles, than you're pretty well set with this CUV for a long time to come.
As they used to say WRT another car, gas, tires and oil, although the brakes will also be on you, of course.

yeah sorry about that

Don't mind him. Apparently he's talking to me and still isn't making any sense.

Congrats on the Pathfinder. Personally I would go with the free oil changes and not worry about it. Whatever they are using I'm sure is more than fine. And better to have all the maintenance done there so there is no question if/when a warranty issue crops up.
