Just want to get a torque wrench for oil plugs on my Subarus. Can anyone recommend a decent one? probably buy it from amazon. Most likely 3/8. I believe the torque for subaru is only like 30 ft lbs. Thanks

This is my choice. Made in USA. Precision Instruments made tons of these as sold by Snap-On. Serviceable. Durable. Not cheap, but worth it!

If that is all you need for I would use a torque adapter like this one. It has been tested as very good.

Or you can get a Quinn 3/8 torque wrench for 35% off til 8/24/25 which is $45.50

Note, a quality beam torque wrench is useful vs. a click type in some situations. Especially when one needs to 'hold' a torque, such as with crush gaskets or stretching bolts. Example: rod and head bolts/studs.

Lotsa good advice. I would only add that you may need a torque wrench with a lower range in the future, for spark plugs and such.
Or a higher range, for wheel lugs...
The HF deals right now are a super deal, IMO.

My 13 year old Neiko stopped clicking at the end of my brake job last month. I’ll see if I can clean it up and test it but for now it’s only for lug nuts that I’m well calibrated for.
I’ve had a 1/2” Precision Instruments 50-250 in my Amazon cart since the pandemic and it was as low as $120 IIRC. Now it’s doesn’t fit my immediate needs and at $220, I’m too poor.
Thinking I’ll probably get the Icon.

Another option from Koken
thats 18ft-lb.

I really like my PI split beam 1/2" torque wrench.. made in usa.
if you dont need it immediately they go up and down in price often.

The ICON is a good alternative at 139.99

Also tekton and capri have similarly value priced split beam torque wrenches on amazon.

I have a couple of Precision Instruments (Snap-On branded) dial torque wrenches. Made the mistake of using one to torque the cylinder head on a motorcycle, and the head nut did the famous stick-slip CRACK, and the shock up into the wrench broke a small internal component on the wrench. Sent it off to PI, and they fixed the broken part, and sent it back with a calibration certificate. Mind you, this wrench is 20+ years old at this point, and now it's good as new.

+1 This is the way. Quality tools are a lifelong investment, buy quality.(y)

The flex head is very useful, and the 10-50 ft lbs range should cover all your spark plug, oil plug, and other light torque requirements. I believe Precision Instruments makes the Snap-On torque wrenches for them if that tells you anything.

I was so impressed with these PI wrenches for precise spark plug work I invested in more of different useful torque ranges.

The 3/8" drive ICON TW-2 Split Beam Torque Wrench . Can be purchased at H.F. well under $100 . AUTOMECHANIC recently purchased one with 40% off and posted pictures under the NEW TOOL thread ( page 259 ) . I too have it and has loud click and easy settings .

Just looked at H.F. site and there's $35 off all torque wrenches that ends tomorrow ( 24th ) . The ICON Professional Split beam 3/8" ( 20 - 100 ft.-lb ) is $99.99 retail and the 1/2" ICON ( 40-250 ft-lb ) is $139.99 retail . The 35% off makes the 3/8" $64.99 and the 1/2" at $90.99 before tax . H.F. has been good about returns and warranty . There's a LIFETIME warranty .

Just got home with one of these myself. I didn't exactly need another torque wrench, but I wanted to try out the split beam. And 35% off was the clincher.
