I believe the Hankooks are made in China. When I mentioned that too the wife, she made a grimace. That might be a showstopper there. She wants to hear what the salesman has to say.

I think the Bridgestones are US and the Yokohamas are Japanese.

We're headed to Discount Tire in a couple of hours. Thanks again for all the input. We're making our daughter kick in some money on this so she gets to experience the thrill of auto maintenance.

Indeed, have your daughter and wife there for the experience. It's nice to be involved in the decision making.

Let us know how you made out. I'm really interested!

I had previous generation Yokohama Avid Touring on LS400 and have current/new Yokohama Avid Touring S on that car now. It's quiet, good on dry and wet roads at good price. The bonus is it made in USA.

Hankook told me they are made in Korea, not China.

Tire Rack lists the country of origin as Korea or China, but Hankook told me all the H727 tires in the USA market are made in Korea.

Here are the emails:

I'm considering buying a set of the Optimo H727 for my Hyundai Sonanta. I was wondering where these tires are made? I realize there may be more than one factory that makes them, but in what countries are the factory/factories located? I try to avoid made in China tires, and I want to make sure these aren't made in China before I buy them. I had a set of Hankook H418 tires in the past that I was satisfied with. Thanks, Stephen

Thank you for the response, but I have a follow up question.

On Tire Rack's website, they list the countries of origin as China and Korea. Is Tire Rack wrong, or are the tires made in both Korea and China?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Hankook&tireModel=Optimo+H727

Thanks again,
Stephen

Hankook has factories in Korea, China, Hungary and Indonesia. For the American market the H727 comes from Korea.

Thanks all for the suggestions. We went to Discount Tire this afternoon. My first request was to ask about the Hankook H727 and their source of manufacture. The salesman said he believed Korea but they were out.

They were also out (in 195/60-15) of stock in the Bridgestone Potenza RE960s and Yokohama YK580s.

I was going to head off to the next Discount Tire about 40 minutes away when the salesman offered me a deal on Michelin MXV4 tires. He offered $20 off per tire and a military discount on the entire deal. It basically came out to $70 more than I had planned but she got a great tire at a good price.

The way Tire Rack does this is by looking at the incoming tires and reading the DOT codes. So at least at one point in time, those tires came from China. I suspect that Hankook told you what was currently being shipped - which could change next week.

RW1,
Yes indeed, you certainly bought a fine tire in the MXV4's. Never had a Michelin that I didn't like as they came on vehicles that I purchaced new although I have never purchaced them after market.

Not bad! Only $70 more than you planned to spend but, (but), you got Michelin's & the MXV4 model at that. WOW!

There are only a few indivdual tire models on the market IMHO, that even rival Michelin(overall) in customer satisfaction, Hmmmm?

If I only had 1 vehicle to put tires on and not 4 vehicles(or more), I'd probably only buy Michelin tires.

Based on my experience using both, I would have recommended either of the previously mentioned General Altimax HP's or Yoko Avid Touring S.

Have the MXV4 Primacy on my Honda Accord, nice tire too, just more pricey than the my two first choices.

@Rand: Primacy MXV4 Your thoughts?

@Sayjac: My selection was limited because I wanted to shop at Discount Tire. When winter break is over, she'll be heading back to central Oregon. I won't see her until summer. If a shop is not convenient, she just won't go.

@Char: Thanks. Winter has yet to appear here but I hope it gives her a safety edge.

I have to say reading tire reviews on Tire Rack was confusing. In one review that tire would be the 'greatest thing since sliced bread'. The next review will declare it worse than useless and a deathtrap to even touch it.
