My haircuts are $12 I give the "stylist" an $8 tip.

She's hot, smells good, has big knockers and wears low cut tops. Even if she didn't give great haircuts, she'd get an $8 tip.

My old barber (moved away) could get me in and out of the chair in about eight minutes. Used clippers for most of the work, a "men's regular"... and cost $5.50 in 1999 dollars. He kept the change when I gave him $6 or 6.50. There was a queue in the waiting room because he was good so he did alright by being speedy.

Apparently in NYC there's a significant local Christmas tipping tradition where you get the mailman, doorman, dry cleaners etc. Might make up for being "too busy" in the rat race the rest of the year.

Worked at a restaurant on a summer resort place where nobody carried cash and they charged everything. Imagine the same at country clubs etc. They weren't allowed to charge tips b/c of the paper trail and tipped poorly. Some made good at the end of the season, many skipped out.

As a paperboy the paper set a $2.75 weekly rate, many gave $3 and there was an xmas tip on top of that too.

I wish my wife would cut my hair. She cuts my hair the best and she has never been trained to cut anybody's hair. She don't like doing it though. So when she goes to the salon I usually ask one of the gals to cut my hair if they have a spare moment. They do alright but charge me like $16. My wife can do it for free but she don't ever seem to want to. Anyways I usually tip the gal who cut my hair and the gal who styled my wife's hair five bucks each! The gal who styles my wife's hair probably expects more as my wife's styling usually costs $100. Oh well I ain't rich...

I take care of the people who take care of me. It's not about being a tightwad or anything like that, it's about rewarding quality service and appreciating good personal work done for me. Doesn't matter what they do.

I'm not here to judge if someone has a good job or not, or is making good money or not. If the guy at a restaurant likes his job, is good at it and takes care of me, I'll tip him. I don't look at people and say to myself, "That person should not rely on me to earn a good wage, they need a better job instead of reaching into my pocket". I think that attitude is arrogant in the extreme and terribly offensive. Why not just call him a racial slur and insult the guy properly?

To answer the OP, yes, I tip my barber, and well. About 25%. And a nice Xmas tip, too. My barber has been taking care of me for several years and I'm happy to return the favor.

Where do I draw the line? I draw it when the service is lousy, uncaring and selfish. Simple as that.

I tip my barber $8 as a rule because: 1) he cuts my hair EXACTLY the way I like it; 2) it worked out well when he charged only $12, I think it's $14 now. And I tend to go a while between cuttings too.

I've actually considered "tipping" my mechanic a case of motor oil I got on sale, b/c I know I can get it cheaper than he does.

Only work he does for me is state inspections, which they lose money on... but I don't want it to look like a bribe. I do give him word-of-mouth referrals for better paying jobs.

Yeah, I've tipped my mechanic before. I don't tip all the time. That's weird, I don't tip my barber, but I tip my mechanic? Not that I don't value my barber, but I really like my mechanic. Keep in mind, I don't let just anyone work on my vehicles. I've been going to this guy for over 7 years now. He's pretty much a one man operation. It took me a long time to find someone I like, trust, and who does good work in my local area.
