While poor practices contributed to many failures I don't believe thats the whole story.
The system evolved over time and I believe VCM 3 and now 4 are better designs.
Pulling the system back to 2 vs three modes improved the motor mount life and tweaking the system to engage closer to BDC stopped and or greatly reduced oil making it way into the combustion chamber.
When using the Ridgeline as a truck I don't believe that off the shelf SN and SN plus were stout enough to thwart carbon deposits when following Hondas MM. Im unsure what the newer model recommends as a formulation.
Switching to AN/ Ester based oil ameliorates and or reverses carbon buildup and keeps the system running as intended.
