Well, the TPMS light just came on last night and will not reset, even though I've checked the tire pressure and it's fine. Just blinks 3 times and goes back to being on solid. Guess I'll be taking it to the dealer this weekend, to fix a piece of fancy electronics I don't really need in the first place.

I'd take it to Discount Tire and save at least 50% over a dealer visit. They have all the necessary equipment to reprogram the tpms. Plus the dealer only does simple maintenance like oil changes, cabin filter, rotation on the weekends. At least at all the dealers around here.

I didn't know that; I thought only the dealership could do stuff like that beyond simply resetting the system. Of course I'll go to a tire shop if it's cheaper

You may have already done this, but check the pressure in the spare. I made that mistake once.

Apparently they dropped the TPMS in the spare after 2008, according to what I've read on the internet. I carry a 12v tire pump in all my vehicles so I'm really not worried about whether or not the spare has air.

Honestly, if I could disable TPMS without modifying the truck's wiring, I would do so. Since I can't, I might as well let it do its thing.

EDIT: It seems I can just disable the system by unplugging a connector above the headliner. I might try that first. The thought of having to worry about battery-operated sensors in my wheels that will eventually require expensive replacement at some point doesn't appeal to me.

On mine, if it blinks, it means system fault. Probably can't hear a sensor. Does your state require TPMS to pass inspection? If not, just ignore the light. When you get new tires, just have the sensors pulled out and left out.

If you have a WinXP laptop, you can get off eBay a version of Techstream plus the cable to plug into the OBDII port. Then you can read the various systems on the vehicle, including TPMS. I haven't played with mine, never remember to look into the TPMS to see if saves faults, but I do recall looking in and seeing sensor #'s. With this tool you *should* be able to recode for new sensors. Failing that, I recall seeing someone did a mod, using some diodes and stuff, to make the dash light go out. It's a stupid system, the TPMS receiver just sends a pass/fail signal it seems to the ECU for it to light up the warning lamp.

CA has no safety inspection of any type, only emissions. I plan on getting the TechStream/cable eventually. Wife has the truck right now and said the light went off all on its own without me doing anything. Will leave everything alone unless it acts up again.

Gotcha, I didn't realize Toyota stopped putting them in the spare. It was a Subaru that got me. Baffled me that the light was on but all the tires were aired up (well except for the spare).
