Suggestions? Current fill is Pennzoil Plat...thinking about changing it up...oil has been in since January but sat for 6 months while I was in Afghanistan.

Over on the GM forums lots of suggestions of M1. My first V8 in probably over 25 years. Almost 11K on the engine now. Looking for input on folks who have had the 5.3 and what they have found to be a good combo. Still partial to the Purolater Classic or AC Delco filters

You can't go wrong with SOPUS products, they are highly regarded by forum members. I use Pennzoil Platinum and Wix filters in my 2010 Silverado with a 5.3, but I believe that any of the Dexos rated 5w30 oils will give you good service.

Relax, the engine in your truck is VERY easy on oils.

Use whatever synthetic is on sale that meets the spec for warranty, change via the OLM and enjoy virtually unlimited engine life.

I'm running Pennzoil Platinum in two 5300's w/ extended cabs... One in a 2000 Sierra (10w-30), and the other in a 2004 Silverado (5w30).

Using a Purolator Pure One PL25288 on both.

I see no reason for using Ultra in something like a 5300 in a pickup truck.

I'm changing it every 9 months, or by the OLM.... whichever occurs first.

...with no worries whatsoever.

Wow! You've got great taste. I've got exactly the same truck, including color - with 4WD and the All Star Package.

After the free dealer changes with a new vehicle, I've always done my own changes. Right now, I've got an engine swap backed up, plus a lot of maintenance due on my other vehicles, so I've been less picky with the new truck. I'm embarassed to admit, I'm about to have the dealer do the third change using AC Delco Dexos (got a coupon for about the same price as the oil) at about 50% left on the OLM. I do have some experience with similar engines (the 6.0) in commercial applications, and have had to deal with an oil related problem, so I'm unwilling to go to low numbers on the OLM anymore, despite what others say. I freely admit, this is based upon superstition, not science, but I don't want to find out at 70k miles the OLM wasn't quite right for the AFM engine.

There is nothing wrong with M1, but the reason I'm convinced it's so popular is because of marketing. How many times have you heard "If it's good enough for a Corvette factory fill, it's good enough for me"? I won't use it for political reasons - they were in cahoots with GM in the blatent Dexos licencing (not certification) scam.

As many of the posters said above, any of the Dexos certified synthetic oils will do better than they need to in the 5.3. Once I've caught up on my other chores, I'll start using Pennzoil Platinum, which has a great track record (and I can get it on sale for a reasonable price).

Yeah it appears than any of the Synthetics meet or beat the Dexos cert.....just depends who is willing to pay for the label though I guess. Quaker State and the Pennzoil Synthetic blend have the Dexos markings on it, surprised I don't see it on the Pennzoil Platinum?

In any event like I said, just fishing for some advice on what other 5.3 owners have been using.

Walmart has the 5 quart jugs of Pennzoil Platinum for 19.97 after you use the 5 dollar coupon that is attached to some of the jugs

PS Is there a HUGE diff between the Plat and the Quaker State Synthetic?

Goose,

My dad has a 2011 Burb with the same engine as your Silverado. We use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 with a Bosch D+ or Napa Plat filters. We just changed the first fill of PP out two weeks ago for its second fill of PP. Even though we dontrequiredexos1 oil in our 2011's, it is of course recommended by the manual. Any API certified 5w30 will keep you in warranty, again per the manual. That being said, we are still going to use the highly regarded Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, she runs well on it thats for sure.

Was in Walmart this afternoon and saw that there is also a 10 dollar gift card rebate as well for buying a 5 quart jug of Ultra or Plat. So basically when all said and done the cost for 5 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum would be 9.97. Not too shabby
