Maybe all oil isn’t the same?

Hello everyone, long time reader, first time poster here. I was just wondering if anyone out there has ever experienced what I have on their truck or car.

I own a 2014 silverado that I purchased new. It’s got a 5.3 V8 with 80k on the clock. For the last 3 years or so it’s pretty much been parked in its spot and gets taken out on the weekends or camping trips to the desert (we live in San Diego). I don’t tow anything heavy (dirt bikes). I don’t hot rod it around or abuse it. I like to take care of my stuff. And it’s been a great truck to me and my family.

So, from day 1 I’ve used regular Mobil 1 0w20 dexos approved oil as called for in the manual. I’ve changed the oil at 5k intervals regardless of what the oil life monitor says. And about 2 years ago it developed a really weird, inconsistent tick around cyl 1.

TICK—— TICKTICKTICK——TICK———————TICKTICK————-TICKTICKTICK

each tick or ticks were 1 to 3 seconds apart

Now I’ve heard bad things about hydraulic lifter failure with these motors so I thought “oh great here we go”.

At the next oil Change by some random chance I tried regular valvoline 0w20. And IMMEDIATELY. The tick was gone. And 2 years went by and it never came back.

So, about a month ago the wife and I are at Costco and I saw the M1 on sale so I picked up a couple cases. I did my normal oil change using the same ac delco pf63 oil filter I always use and to my surprise that ol tick was back! Even my wife was like “dang! what the heck is that?” I was scratching my head too! That night it was really bugging me so I decided screw it, I’m gonna eat the cost of another oil change and go to Walmart and buy the valvoline again just to see what happens. I went and got Valvoline EP 0w20, rolled under the truck again, dumped the brand new oil, replaced the brand new filter, and I kid you not the tick was instantly gone again. I even dragged the wife outside just to have a witness.

My question is how is this possible? I know different companies use a little this or a little that here n there different but, come on, how much difference could it make? For the most part all big box oils with the same certs are gonna perform pretty much the same right? So why does my truck not like M1 anymore?
I guess I’m just going to stick with Valvoline now. I just find it to be so weird. Sorry for the long story. I figure if there’s anyplace to ask about this kind of thing it’s here. Just was wondering if anyone else has heard of something like this.
Have you ever changed the lifter screen/filter??

Maybe it IS THE OIL!!!
Thank You ! Zing............. Belly laugh of the day for me. I am easy, it dont take much. Did you remember that one from Tv? I really miss the times when the folks who made tv commercials had and used a sense of humor. Even some of our oil observations from time to time here can end up quite funny.:D

Remember these gems?

Yep. 2000 - 2002 is right about when the madness (industrial strength / sized) pick up trucks started to fill the streets. A buddy still has his 1982 GMC full size Sierra 1/2 ton. We all got a kick a while back when one of his sons came over and parked his 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 next to his dad's
truck. It made the 1982 look like a child's toy.

Here are a couple of screen shots of the oil specs but it would be better if you posted pics of the actual bottles of oil. There are variations within each brand.

Valvoline may have more Moly, which can help by providing less friction which could impact how parts slide and react with each other. The Ford Coyote 5.0L V8 is known for what they call the "BBQ tick", and some oils and oil additives make the tick go away. BTW, my Coyote likes Valvoline 5W-30, but it was never a ticker to begin with, but does sound a bit better with the Valvoline than it did on Motorcraft 5W-20.

Was this ticking in your truck all the time, even after fully warmed up? Did it tick with the cold oil too, or just start ticking after warm-up. Detail like that might help focus in on it better.
Weird that you mention this as my dad's 2015 f150 5.0 started making top end noise ticking about a year after he got it. I finally got it to go away after a few changes of Valvoline synthetic and rislone.

I guess I should stick to Valvoline in it

Sounds like Subaru BS blaming oil for their terrible engine designs.
Hard to imagine that cars with the highest residual value after 5 years and a handful of Ward’s Best Engines awards have terrible engine designs.

The two biggest Subaru issues were obviously head gaskets on open-deck EJ251s and oil burning on 1st year FB25s. The HG issue is traced back to poor HG technology and failing engine grounds and that is literally all it takes to fix once and for all. Subaru got burned (literally) by low-tension oil rings on the FB25, and quickly made a design change.

There are plenty of Subarus even just here on the board that are well over 150-200k to rebut any argument you think you can make regarding their alleged lack of reliability.

The fact that you can maintain or fix your way around these isn’t really an indicator. I know a guy with 170k on a BMW N63 which is not their finest hour. The BMW N54 won Ward’s and International Engine of the Year multiple times and it’s a total reliability disaster.

In my opinion they are not worth the trouble and quirks for the power output. I know maybe 8 people that own Subarus right now and 3 of them have had new engines in warranty… a WRX, an STi, and a BRZ. I assume all FA variants except the EJ STi. Small sample size but it makes you wonder.

Wasn't there a big valve spring recall (they could fail and do major damage) on some engines too?

Shades of Honda VTEC filter clogging!

Learn something new almost every day!

Attached is a professional video from Melling

I have replaced thousands of the lifter filter. It’s a very easy replacement. We replaced them for people who try to extend oil changes, they always have grit and are very dirty. We also added cleaners in oil to clean lifters as well.

When I had my 1500 in the shop after getting rearended, that was one thing that the auto guys told me to watch out for and make sure to do regular oil changes because they can get clogged fairly quickly.

Yes, people who did 5,000 mile OCI never really experienced lifter or AFM issues, people who did extended drains, always ended up having issues with AFM and lifter tick. that filter or screen as we called it gets plugged very easily. Mobil produces the genuine AC DELCO lubricants. We also used 5w30 in the customers trucks that requested it. Engine actually sounded wayyyy better as well.
