Well, I used to do oil changes cold- then last time I did a warm oil change in the winter and got to see dirty oil drain out and realized that you guys were right that hot oil suspends contaminants. I think my engine is better for it and wish to continue this route, BUT... I checked back sometime later and saw my drain plug was leaking for the first time in 3 years of ownership and the first, iirc, hot oil change. This is on my truck.

In the past, though, I changed a Dodge Intrepid hot and got a handful of threads out. Also, after a few changes on a Sienna van threads came out as well, but was told it was cured with a new plug so it seems it was the plug threads and not from the pan.

What gives? I must be doing something wrong as lube shacks pretty much only change hot oil and appear to do no harm.

i always change all lubes as hot as possible, never an issue with threads, as noted torque wrench or just tighten snug + use med loctite, works for me!! a time-sert is said to be the best repair for often used threaded items.

Used to work in a lube shop in the 80's. All done hot, repeat customers, never an issue. Been doing hot myself for years. Like everyone is saying it got over torqued.

Are you the only one that has performed oil changes on these vehicles?

Powered wrenches are a good way to over torque the plug. Also, are you using crush washers?

Stop overtightening and this wouldn't happen

there's no way hot oil is causing this. Oil would burn at the temps needed to actually affect the metal.
