Hi guys,

Trying to figure out what would be better for my dad's new Suburban w/ the 5.3 liter Vortech. Both oils seem to be very good for the price point. Since he has a 2011 we need to use a dexos1 approved oil, which of course both of these oils are. Shortly we will be doing the first oil change to get the FF out. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Either or would be sufficient... Assuming you're following the factory recommendations. I personally like both oils very much, the Quaker is usually a little cheaper. Don't change out the FF too soon, as you will load up you're new synthetic oil with an excessive amount of wear metals. May want to do a cheaper oil change at 2k/3k if you can find one being that you need the D1 approval. Not sure what the price point of the AC Delco Dexos, could be cheaper than QSUD or PP? Then go another 3k and do the full syn oil change.

QSUD would get my vote between the two; it is a little cheaper and the add pack is right there with PP. I recently switched to QSUD from PP in my 2006 Azera and 2006 Elantra and have no regrets.

Mobil1 actually has the dexos1 label on the front. I would use that or AC Delco oil. Keep documentation!

Limited to the two listed, I pick PP.

If it were my truck, PU.

Use whatever oil/filter you want, just document.

I have a 2011 Silverado and have used both the oils you are considering. The trucks first change was with PP and it is now on it's second change with QSUD. While Shell hasn't gotten the logo on its bottles, both of these oils are on the official dexos approved list. So there should be absolutely no warranty issue with either oil.

As for the difference between the two I can't make any great distinction. As I have read that the new PU formulation will have the dexos approval as well (I know it certainly can meet the spec) I may move up to it for its advertised superior cleaning power. I know the GM AFM trucks occasionally have oil usage problems that some have associated with stuck rings. If mine does this it won't be because I used an inferior oil.

For now, either PP or QSUD is an excellent choice for me and you.

Oh yeah, don't forget to register your vehicle with whatever you choose and you can get a $20 rebate for either oil.

QSUD warranty

PP warranty

I have the 2010 Tahoe with that same engine. So far I have used M1, M1EP, PP, Napa Synthetic, and QSUD.
I have not had consumption issues with any of them. I change at 6-7k (50% OLM), and have used only ACDelco filters.
No difference in any of the oils from a performance/fuel economy aspect. Not done UOAs.
I did notice on 2 cold mornings that the current fill of QSUD and a PF48 makes significant chatter on start up for the first 5-10 seconds. I am thinking it is the filter allowing drain down, but not sure. I will use a Bosch filter the next change, but I did not have that at all last winter using PF48's and M1 / PP. Might just be this particular filter.

Thanks for the replies guys. We are going to keep the FF in until it hits around 3k miles then change it up. I am leaning towards the PP for its first change, but its really a toss up between the two. Since we have had great luck with the Napa Gold filters, we are going to continue using them for all of our vehicles.

Once PU gets the approval we will probably switch to it...

I noticed that you were in Minnesota. One thing I noticed with the new 5W-30 PU is the pour point is -51 C or approx -60 F. That even sounds "Gopher State" proof.

Pennzoil Ultra SN TDS

Wow a Noack Volatility, % of 6.4??? and 5.0 for the 5W20? HOLY (*(*&*%$!

Yeah, most of us are still in disbelief about these new PU specs.

Well if those numbers are accurate, Must be some really good base stock their using.

So going off of the spec sheet that was provided above...is PU 5w30 dexos1 approved?

Well, it says so right in that spec sheet.

Sorry, I should have worded my question/statement different.

What I meant to ask/say is...

SM PU 5w30 - not dexos1 approved

SN PU 5w30 - dexos1 Approval

I couldnt access the current PDS on pennzoil's website last night. Interesting they are still showing the SM version for Ultra. Thanks for all the insight guys.

I emailed the GM dexos center about a week ago in regards to that question. To date I haven't received a reply. With specs like what is provided on the TDS I certainly expect it exceeds the spec, just waiting for confirmation from GM.

But PU is not on the 'official list' QS Synthetic Blend would probably be the cheapest if you wanted to wait one more change before going to PP or QSUD.

I'm beginning to wonder if we will ever see the green dexos logo on PP or QSUD. Is it the license that calls for the 70c per quart fee or the logo. (maybe wrong on the precise fee per quart).

Well, they're already on the dexos1 approved list. SOPUS is likely just going through old labels like they have before. I'm sure if they're on the approved list already, it's not a case of getting cold feet on the fees or how to label it.

Agreed. I was just at my local WM and none of the approved sopus products had the dexos logo. After seeing the Dec 2011 revised spec sheet for SN PU it seems that it will be on the shelves soon, perfect timing for the first oil change in a couple of months.
