" I know the GM AFM trucks occasionally have oil usage problems that some have associated with stuck rings."

If you use a tuner to turn off the AFM you can prevent the problem.

He's referring to turning off the Active Fuel Management, which is apparently the cause of stuck rings. First I've heard of it, which doesn't make it not true.
Mine is on so little, I'd be suprised if it has an impact on fuel effeciency or stuck rings.

I've discussed the green logo before. My understanding of the initial DEXOS license fee was a one time charge AND something like 70c/qrt . If the logo is not on the product, maybe they don't pay the per quart fee ?? Anybody know for sure.

And only the SN is approved, that's why some bottles of M1 in my store didn't have the logo, they were left over SM.

Well, there is mention of ARX, MMO, and Kreen by posters here, and elsewhere. These all have a general good reputation as cleaning up sludge and deposits from many anecdotes.

I'm currently into the ARX cleaning phase of 2000 miles, and awaiting to see it if cleans the top deck of my Triton heads.

Also, Ive heard of good results with the Shell Rotella( as mentioned) or just plain Pennzoil yellow for several short OCI's.

If you want it fast: Kreen seems the way to go. Slow: short OCI's with oil.

It's not the rings, here is what we have to do when a customer complains of
oil consumption in the '07 5.3L Chevys.
Change the oil and make sure its totally filled to spec
Have customer come back to check oil useage
If the useage is more than 2 quarts of oil in 3000 miles we then throw lifters in it for the #7 cylinder and pray that works. If it doesn't, we just call the consumption normal for that engine per GM SI & it usually happens at 80-100K miles and is warrantied till 116k. Up till early 2011 we were throwing piston rings in them while GM was trying to figure it out.
Back to the thread, I would use whatever you can get the best deal on, so long as your drain intervals coincide with your driving habits.

The cylinder wall oil from splash works its' way up into the piston rings on the non-firing cylinders.

There was a windage tray redesign to decrease splash.

Less volatile (synthetic) clean (well maintained) oil decreases the amount of carbon available to stick the rings.
