Thoughts on partial oil change?

Not worth the effort. I have a few empty quart bottles around and would just drop the quart from the 5 quart jug into one of them. Eventually it will get used.

Having looked over the info regarding old oil being able to protect better than fresh oil (a severely debatable point, I realize)...

I just wonder, assuming that the old oil argument is correct... I wonder if you could get the best of both worlds by doing a partial oil change?

In a 5 quart engine, you could pump two or three quarts out through the dipstick tube, and replace them.

Then change the oil filter at the next interval, and maybe pump out and replace 2 quarts...

I thought of this because in my 1993 Ford Escort's earlier years, it was burning about a quart of oil every 1000...

I don't like getting under my car and I don't drive as much as I used to so I have simply siphoned a quart out of the sump and added enough to bring it up to full mark for the last year or so. Engine uses a quart per 4,000 miles. Filter is an oversized Fram Ultra so I'm not worried about that. Question is, if this were to continue indefinitely, is there a downside to not ever totally draining the oil?

2005 dodge diesel, dello 400 with wix filter. Say I went 5,000 and then drained 1 gallon and added a gallon every 2500 miles after, how long would you go before a filter change and a complete oil change.

I just did UOA and got my report. I would post it, but BITOG doesn't accommodate posting pdf files, and I'm too lazy to manually enter all the data. Getting to the point, my particle count is 14/13/11 compared to my baseline sample of new oil having 17/16/13; so my oil is about 8 times as clean as new oil, all of my wear metals look excellent and my TBN is well within limits...

However, I don't think my air filter is as good as my oil filtration; I've got 30 ppm silicon. (Blackstone and other labs start caution at about 20 ppm Si.). Since I've run the oil only 8K, I've used (and drawn out...

Just use the quart up on the next oci, then you'll have two left over, then three and then enough for a complete oci.

I assume you have a naturally aspirated engine; if this is not the case (i.e., you have a turbo) everything below may be irrelevant.

Buy individual quarts instead of a jug during a parts store sale/rebate offer; they don't care if you take a 5 qt jug or individual qts. Then you only have a single qt bottle on the shelf.

Also, for the oil-only change in the middle, don't change anything at 2k. Use a premium filter and do an oil-only change at 4k. Change the filter every 8k. Unless, of course, you have a confirmed dirty engine that could benefit from frequent OCs (like my Cadillac 3.6).

I have a fumoto drain valve on my car that + my set of ramps I can already do a full oil change + filter in less than 15 min. My car takes exactly 4 quarts. I buy 5 quarts because they are much cheaper. But hate having them take up space in my hot and humid garage.

I know there is really no added benefit to doing this, but it cant make things worse right? I do 4k change intervals and was thinking drain a quart and 2k mark and add the quart i have left over

I extract the oil every 2500-3000 miles on the wife’s Rogue and change the filter between 5&6k. I could see you doing similar. That’s just me being proactive on maintenance for the vct engine.

I extract the oil every 2500-3000 miles on the wife’s Rogue and change the filter between 5&6k. I could see you doing similar. That’s just me being proactive on maintenance for the vct engine.

Why? 7500 miles was the commonly recommended OCI 25 years ago.

Just keep the extra oil in your basement or closet. That's all.

This isn't the first thread with someone who doesn't want to store a quart or partial quart of oil. I think this is the sort of person who should live in an efficiency apartment in Japan. One leeetle rice cooker, one leeetle frying pan, one leeetle bowl..............

Im all for it. And I really like the M1 hybrid oil.
Need more details though. What is the capacity of the vehicle? I think you have enough oil for a full change.

Full oil change with filter somewhere in the 5 Qts range. I have done this several times now and 4 Liters seems to be all I can extract out and I yank that pump to my guts fall out conversion is 4.227 Qts. I pour in 4.25 and pull the stick and it's living in the happy zone now come next oil change I will drop the filter and it will probably take 4.89 Qts. Mobil 0W-20 Hybrid is nothing more than a tweaked AFE formula if I had to guess but it is a good oil from what I hear this is my 1st time running it.

All good. So really it’s not what one would say a partial drain and fill, like 1 qt. For you, it’s the limitation of how much you can extract out. No big deal with the residual.

I also have a fumoto valve on my two cars. For me this is very helpful. However since I'm 87 years and sometimes a bit slow the oil change takes me a bit longer than the time you can do it in.
