Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

1997 Mazda Protege 286,xxx miles. Yellow Bottle Pennzoil 5w30 and 10w30 every 3k miles with whatever oil filter on sale. Still runs well but pretty much retired now. Best car I have owned.

I just wanted to see how many people here have over 150,000 miles on their original engines, to see what kind of oil you've been using and what kind of intervals.

We talk about a lot of different oils on here, and critique a lot of UOAs, but the absolute best way to find out if any particular routine works, is to look at those people who have had success with it by getting long life from their engine! That is truly what we are all trying to achieve here.

So if you've owned your car since new (or at least know the exact prior history of it from new), please step in and give us your input!

I think this could be a very interesting topic!

Patman,

Well Pat my 89' Toyota Camry with about 250K has been on M1 10W- 30 since bought new back in 89'. Now I use M1 5W-30.

Seems like Ford finally fixed their transmission, I rarely saw the old ones last more than 120K.

89 Mazda turbo purchased with 120,000kms (Now 260,000) on it and slack oil/filter changes. 25W70 for many many years then 5W40 and one lot of 10W30 (never again) for an RX clean. 5W40 with some M1 15W50 top up oil in now. 2000 Outback purchased w/60,000ms on it (now 125,000). I used D1 5W40 then Redline 5W30, dealer 10W40, now Havoline Energy 5W30 for the forseeable future. Redline for all gear and p/s fluids.

Didn't see this thread 'til today. I've always has higher mileage cars.

1998 VW GTi VR6, 170,000 engine replaced due to timing chain failure 6,000 miles ago with another used AAA engine. Currently running the cleaning phase of Auto-RX treatment using Rotella 5W40 synthetic. Red Line MTX in the trans.

1998 Mercedes ML320, 175,000 miles. Currently running GC, Merc ATF in the trans. This is NOT lifetime fluid as the manufacturer states (or used to).

Only the race car has less, about 102K. M1 15W50. It leads an easy life, only gets driven on weekends!

1998 Subaru Impreza, heavily autocrossed all last year (33 races, 99 ProSolo launches and 401 autocross laps) with 50K miles in the last 12 months, now has 194K on the original 2.2L, using either Motul 300V 5w-40, a short stint on Elf Excellium NF 5w-40, and now on AMSOIL 5w-40 until she croaks :)

1997 Honda Accord V6 2.7L automatic. Rolled over to 200K tonight, Mobil 1 5w-30 from 60K onward. RedLine ATF in the tranny, time for a change...thanks for reminding me Wife's daily driver.

1990 Chevrolet G30-HD commercial chassis van, 350 with 3-spd auto (rebuilt 40K ago). 262K on original untouched engine, Pennzoil oil and filters all its life....sludgy in the heads, desperate need of ARX but we don't drive it that much. Now has a mix of NAPA 10w-30 synthetic and 3 x SuperTech filters with a quart of MMO in there to help soften things up, will pull the pan and clean the oil pickup before the van sees too much driving shortly. Yuck! RP MaxGear in the diff, previously looks like factory fill for 260K miles

Mobil 1 ATF recently with a new filter, it's the first change since the rebuilt tranny went in from the previous owner. Hope the van will live through a move to Texas in a few months and towing the autocross car around!

Just rolled over to 159K today, I purchased it 99 weeks ago with 106k on the clock.

I've been running Mobil 1 5W30 with a change every 4 months, current fill is on about 5 months and 9400 miles.

From the records, the previous owner did either Chevy dealership service every 3-5K and then a local lube and carwash at about the same intervals with Mobil 5W30 or 10W30. I might use a quart in the 8-10K mile interval.

I'm switching to the M1 EP when I hit 160K and going for 15K or 6 month intervals.

Oh, and I use Purolator filters.

TB

Let's see, three years later, give or take.

Now at 217K on the clock. Tried the M1 EP for a about 18 months without drama. Did the same thing with Oilbabe's 2002 Camry, now at 178K miles for a while.

Both cars are now back at conventional oils at 5K intervals. Well, the Camry has Supertech synthetic so I'm not out there changing oil in the winter, so it's going 4 months, or about 8K miles until spring. Oilbabe is at about 2K/month usage, and the Prizm has dropped from about 25K/year to about 18K/year as I'm doing more on-site work and taking the train to this customer's site instead of driving the entire St. Louis metro area.

Living in the apartment for the past about 6 months has curtailed much of my tinkering with cars. However, oilbabe and I found a home and will close on 1/25 on our 2700 square foot shack.

First time ever that I owned a home with an attached three car garage.

Let's add a bit to this, since I cut myself off.

I've been using mostly Havoline 5W30 and 10W30 in the warmer weather. I've also used Advance Auto Oil as well on occassions. Both cars are now using about 1 quart every 2000-2500 miles and are on 5K intervals.

I stopped using synthetic during the warmer months due to the consumption. I did use it in oilbabe's Camry just because I didn't want to do a winter oil change while in the apartment complex. (Strangely, there is no prohibition regarding doing such work in our lease.)

Using Purolator, Advance Auto, Supertech and the left-over Toyota filters now that I traded the Scion tC for the Sienna.

1997 Lincoln Town Car--172,000 miles--mobil -1, 5-30 changed most often at 7500 miles. I did one run of M-1 EP for 14,700 miles--oil was down only 1/4 qt at that change--vertually no oil usage at 7500 mormal change interval . mostly Purolator Plus filters

I have a 1983 Chevrolet El Camino that has 355,000 miles and I am using Amsoil 10W-30, recently did an Auto-Rx treatment, I usually change the oil every 6000 miles.

my 99 chevy cav has 168,000 miles on it using mostly pennzoil or quaker state with 3k oci and 5k oci later when i found out 3k was unecessary...my buddy bought it off me and last 2 oil changes i amde him do were super tech regular oil for 8,000 miles and ST syn for 10,000 miles...kind of long for me, tomrrow i am making him change oil and using mobil clean 5000...was 9 bucks for 5 qts and filter at autozone...smoking deal...my friend doesnt care about oil changes, but he will top off... i added 3/4 of a quart between last oil change, that should help replenish oil a little... i am so anal, i buy the oil for him, i cant stand the thought of him ruining my old car

2000 Honda Odyssey with 186,750 miles. Nothing in it but synthetic. Mostly M1 but now PP. The engine is bullet proof and I don't think it will ever die. Opposite situation with the trans. I'm on the third transmission. The tranny is a huge Honda mistake. Oil changed every 7,500 - 9,000 miles.

Currently at 187K miles on 1985 Porsche 911 original engine, never opened. Running mainly GTX 20W50 (dino). 7K OCI until about 120K, 3K OCI until 160K. 13qt capacity. Rated for 600miles/qt consumption and it's there. Now experimenting but leaning toward 5W40 synthetic as spec'd by Porsche. Don't care about lower ZDDP levels but will know in a year when I do valve adjust after 25K miles (using 800ppm oils).

Get this...original starter lasted until 187K. I got the car at 17K about 17 years ago. Actually starter was still strong but pinion gear hitting flywheel (I thought solenoid was weak).
