from what everyone reports, the thickest 30wt seems to be GC 0w-30. thinnest 40wt is Mobil 1 0w-40. any others that you know of?

It would be hard to find a thicker 30 than GC. Its KV100 is 12.2 centistokes, and the limit for 30-weight oil is 12.5. If you could find a 30-weight at 12.4, it wouldn't perform much differently.

Pennzoil Platinum Euro, Pennzoil Ultra Euro, Quaker State Euro 5w40 13.1 cSt @ 100C
Mobil 1 ESP 5w40 13.4
Castrol SLX 0w40 13.5
Amsoil 100% Synthetic 5w40 13.7
Kendall GT-1 5w40 13.9
Chevron/Havoline Synthetic 5w40 13.9

Mobil 1 0w40 is 14 cSt @ 100C

It seems like the Pennzoil and Quaker State oils are about as thin as could be found in a 40-weight. They are only about 5% above the minimum viscosity, and they must allow some margin for shearing in order to stay in grade. All ILSAC oils must pass a test for stay-in-grade shear stability.

What's ILSAC? And what's it doing in my API and Euro rated oils?
