DexosR Mobil 1 Supercar 0w-40 vs 5w-50

Would there be any issues running the Dexos R rated Mobil 1 Supercar 5w-50 in an engine that calls for the Dexos R rated Mobil 1 Supercar 0w-40? I wonder if this would provide better protection against rod bearing or lifter damage that seems to occasionally pop up in the GM supercharged LT4 applications these days.
I think it's the only Dexos R rated oil that is thicker than 0w-40.

No issue.

In general a 10 weight above or below isn't going to cause "problems" - the 10 above would give you more protection at the cost of a bit of FE. The 10 below will give you much more fuel economy but a smidge more engine wear.

If you have a supercar that is driven like a supercar, on the track or flat out on highways, go ahead take the 50. If you're using it to go buy milk and attend church .. lighter oils work fine.

That's what I do, I believe I posted the UOAs here.

The manual days to use Mobil 1 15w50 in track, so I don't see why a 50 would be a problem.
Ah interesting. The Blackwing manual doesn’t mention any alternative weights other than 0w-40.

I was concerned about changing weights because of the stories I read of failed lifters from dealers putting in the wrong oil (weight and type).

No issue I'd think, but do note that you should run shorter OCI with the 5W-50, it's got notably lower Ca/Mg.

The two options you are looking at are both DexosR. Be sure to disable AFM/DOD until you can mechanically delete.

What was the "wrong oil" dealers were using? Dexos 1 5w30 was the specified oil for the LT4 from 2015 to 2018. Supposed to use 15w50 for the track, as stated earlier.

Blackwing with the 6MT doesn't have the DOD thankfully.
The manual doesn't really give other options other than 0w-40 hence the question.

SW91: I'm not sure what the incorrect oil was.

chris179: thanks that is good to know. I doubt I'll hit the mileage limits before I just do the annual change, but it's interesting to know.

Also I'm curious if the Supercar oils shear almost out of grade quickly like some other Mobil 1 oils.

I thought I've seen some UOAs showing 0w-20 and 0w-30 Mobil 1 oils starting at the lower end of their grades.

kschachn won't agree with me ;), but I will say that if you are concerned about viscosity loss among the 0W-40s, it does appear that Mobil 1 ESP X4 0w40 loses less viscosity for whatever reason than FS and Supercar. That is my pick among the Mobil 1 0W-40 offerings.

Both Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 and ESP x4 0W-40 are thicker than Supercar 0W-40. Also, the first two have much stringent German car approvals and are DexosR as well. I would definitely use any of those over Supercar 0W-40, if you want to stick to cheap widely available Mobil oils.
If money is not an issue - HPL, Motul, Amsoil.

Mobil 1 FS 0W-40

Mobil 1 ESP x4 0W-40

This oil will also suits you well and I believe much better than Supercar 0W-40.
Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40

All three oils are ticker than the Supercar 0W-40 oil. The last two oils are specifically recommended for Porsche cars, so they must be exceptional oils.

Your Blackwing does have the DOD hardware but it just does not activate like it does in the automatic cars. The hardware (valvetrain components/lifters) can still fail. The 5w50 Supercar does shear to a 40wt oil fairly quickly (within ~1000miles or more quickly if you’re tracking it) but still has some decent antiwear additives as it was designed for the C8 Z06. There are some better quality oils out there but the Supercar oils are still stout.

Thanks for the clarification Judy.
I'm trying to stay with DexosR while in warranty. I figure I can either use the supercar oils, the ESP X4, the Castrol 0w-40M (which hasn't been easy to find), or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40. I've got to do more research on how the other two are.

Have you found the Castrol M anywhere??? I've never seen it for sale.

Keep an eye out for AutoZone bundle deals. In March, they had 5 qts of ESP X4 (or any Mobil 1, except Supercar) and a filter for $36.
