Riding in a Japanese taxi kind of spoils the experience anywhere else.

Their Taxi is about the same experience as what we called Limo in the US, and priced like one for their income level as well.

If you go to trial in Japan the jurors and judges pretty much assume the police wouldn't have arrested you if you weren't guilty.

Their police don't arrest until they are 99% sure they can convict. In the US we arrest just to give you a warning so if you are charged with evidence for another cases we can use that to stack on more time. Some people have argued that Japan doesn't charge criminals enough and cause certain harms from happening to potential victims, but due to the "if someone is bullied he probably deserves it" social opinion, they know even a careless mistake in arrest can destroy someone's life. It is a very different justice system over there (not that it is better or worse, just different).

Oh, the social opinion of someone being bullied is "he probably did something that deserves it".

it seems to me they got a pretty good deal for their bad behavior and reformed themselves as well as anyone could hope for.

Their opinion on what happen to their former military lead government that leads to their WW2 era behaviors are very bipolar. Unlike other nations that have very unified opinion of "we were the good guys" or "it was just self defense", Japan has a very different opinion of either "we don't want to be ever like that again because our politics were hijacked by dictators, the majority of us are also victims forced to the front lines" or "we didn't really lose and we didn't really surrender, see, we are still #1 in the world but now win in economy instead of military".

I have my own opinion of the WW2 era Japan but I would never talk about WW2 or A-bomb in front of them out of politeness. Most of them don't talk about it among themselves on this subject either, nor will you ever get each individual's true opinion on this even if you want to ask them.
