The Honda Oil Filter Thread

Ok so I can get a 12 pack of the Pentius PLXL7317 for $87 CAD on Amazon.

I haven’t seen any of the ratings for that filter or the Honda “003” made in Japan filters but am I safe to assume the 7317s are better? The C&Ps I’ve seen on here look great.

I want to buy one of these 12 packs of Pentius PLXL7317, but will my car last that long, and/or will I buy another Honda that would be compatible with my stack of filters (taking things in reverse)? Price for just one filter isn't good here.

I had the same internal debate, and decided I'd rather have too many than not having one when it was needed. At just under $5/filter, and filters having a long shelf life, I mashed the Buy button.

It's my understanding Honda hasn't changed their filter fitment (maybe a part number and build, but all are compatible?) for many years. Their filters are the same for all Honda models except for the S2000, and there are other brands using this filter, also.

Does anyone know if/where to find specs like efficiency ratings and bypass valve settings for the factory Honda filters? Especially the made in Japan version.

Just FYI in case it'll help anybody, but the Honda LB15 1.5 4 bangers (NA in the Honda Fit, 2015-2020 and presently turbocharged in the Civic and Accords) can take the larger Fram XG3593a's no problem. I use them exclusively on the wife's Fit to up the meager 3.5 litre/ quart oil capacity to 3.7/3.8. I know it's not much but seeing as it burns .5 of a litre/quart over it's OCI, I sleep better knowing that there's over 3 litres in the thing at any one time.

almost certainly a 15400-RTA-003. That would be the Mahle-Tennex filter. Excellent quality.
Yes, I'm sure it is the JDM 15400-RTA-003 filter made by Mahle in Japan. Here is another place that sells them -

https://racinghistorycompany.com/product/honda-oil-filter/

From using ChatGPT - FWIW - it states that the 15400-RTA-003 is a step towards the current HAMP filters (now blue vs old green can) as far as flow and efficiency. Meaning, they are improved over the A01 part number JDM Honda Filtech oil filters. They have superseded the A01's.

Just confirming this, they are. I got this filter from the first site Iinked earlier in the thread - $10.50 shipped.

Is the obvious subpar OEM 15400-PLM-A02 considered to be a high flow filter ? That's the kind of filter I'm looking for,,,,for my 615,120K K-24 engine. That's what I'm using now at 3k OCI's.. Engine seems to like it. No dry starts.

What's the definition of "high flow" since the thread about the myth of "Flow Over Efficiency" shows that almost all filters have pretty low dP vs flow, and are within a few dP of each other at pretty high flow rates.

I think it is as Honda apparently specified a less efficient, by lab test, filter from Fram. They could have just used the extra guard, but didn’t. Whip City Wrencher has posted several different Made in Japan oil filters. I think all of them had many open voids in the media. Surprising results. Clearly manufacturers have to engineer their filters to flow well as much as possible. Probably the most efficient Honda oil filter is the USA made filter. Not gospel, but it seems that way from tests.

Thank you, need as much oil at various temps, to reach critical parts quickly. The engine is pretty much shot in my book, so super clean oil won't make much of a difference to it at that mileage. As long as it's somewhat filtered is good enough. Gets 3k OCI's anyway. OEM filter will work just fine. Using 20k oil . Catch some good sales at Walmart ! Got oil stashed all over the house..LOL..

Too old, like me...Too many miles 615,120k..Plenty of power. No oil burning. Idles smooth ( had a few valve adjustments on it done already)...Nothing to actually point out that wrong with it. Guess I'm just old school...don't trust an engine with that many miles on it. I'm used to the 70's cars.....100k and they were toast. I know the K24 is an amazing engine....but it was A LOT of stop and go, and quite a few long highway romps with it. Just want to keep things lubed on cold NY winter starts.

Are you racing this engine near redline a lot where the flow going through the engine is 10+ GPM? If not, then the difference in dP vs flow of any filter isn't going to make any difference to keeping the engine well lubricated with oil flow. You are caught up in the "flow over efficiency" myth. ;) Use the correct W grade oil, and keep the engine revs down until the oil warms up some, and don't over-load the oil filter with debris (do decent OCIs and filter changes) ... those things are what's important.

yeah that mileage is impressive . . and this is the original transmission ?
