The AVERAGE OCI Thread

Never. That's right, NEVER. Not me of course as I use to change oil/filter every 5000 miles. Now that I have a new vehicle with an OLM, I will let it tell me when to change.

But I knew a guy near Cincinnati that had a Chevy truck bought brand new about 15 years ago. He changed oil and filter after the first few thousand miles and only topped off when necessary. He did change filter every so often but never again touched the oil drain plug. The old boy said he did that all his life and never had a problem. The truck in question had 150,000 miles on it when he sold it!!!

Six vehicles. Twice a year regardless of miles for each. Mobil 1 and now Mobil 1 EP. Might go to once a year with the EP. All except the new Ody which I'm breaking in.

That is, if everyone put the miles and the coincidental months that it occured over. I think you might see more of a symetrical bell curve ..or perhaps skew the other way.

if someone wanted to start a different thread with an actual POLL to make it easier on themselves, that would answer your question. as of now it looks like we have two types of OCI outliers, a.k.a. oil weirdos

, those who change before 2.5k and those who change after 10k.

final graph & average (i really need to get some real work done) 616,250/127 = 6,042

I have one vehicle that's a 10K mile OCI.

I heve 2 others that will likely end up 5000-7500 miles depending on the oil I use in them. One of them was a 10K interval in the past when I was driving it most of the time and using M1 in it.

~2000-3000 ~monthly

i drive a lot. and it's an old car, prolly introduces more contaminants into oil than newer engines. not willing to try extended on it. I'd prolly go 5k on M1/GC/RL/AMS etc, but just haven't been able to convince myself to make the switch. think i like changing my oil too much to go full synth all the time. lol

2001 VW Passat 1.8T: Mobil 1 0W-40, 3K mi/5K km or 6 months, whichever comes first; mostly city driving; 4.4-qt. sump w/ oversize filter

2003 Dodge Stratus 2.4L DOHC: Pennzoil 5w30, 3.5K mi/6K km or 6 months; city-highway mix; full 5-qt. sump w/ very small filter (TSB against using oversized filter, because of real -- don't ask me how I know

-- danger of bottoming out)

Usually around 3K-4.5K miles. I may extend to 5K this time around...currently running 3 qts Mobil Clean 7500 & 1 qt Mobil 1 EP...all 10W30...in a '97 Celica GT with the sludge-prone 2.2-liter 4-cylinder. She's got over 150K miles now

Hmmmm

Theoretically

6000 miles in Porsche using synthetic 60/40 Hwy/City
5000 miles in Acura using Dino 10/90 Hwy/City

However that is as much mileage as these cars see in a year, so they often get changed before those mile intervals simply based on time.

I maintain 5 vehicles total.
2005 Mustang GT 2000 OCI (Driven hard).
2002 BMW 325i 6000 OCI (Wifes car).
2001 Toyota Echo 5000 OCI (My commute car).
2004 BMW R1150RT 3000 OCI (My touring bike).
2003 HD Fatboy 1500 OCI ( My alter ego).
All vehicle use synthetic oils. GC, Mobil 1, and Redline.
