There were gorgeous girls (Heather Locklear, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Olivia Newton-John, Samantha Fox) with lots of hair and sexy clothes. Remember the "20-Minute Workout" on TV?
We had pop music like "Puttin' On the Ritz," "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head, "Holding Out for a Hero," "Call Me," "We Got the Beat," "Danger Zone," "Eye of the Tiger," Weird Al, "Walk Like an Egyptian," Huey Lewis's "Heart of Rock 'n' Roll," and England Dan and John Ford Coley's "It's Sad to Belong to Someone Else (When the Right One Comes Along)."
Cars, not so much. I had a '65 Mercury Park Lane with a power rear window I bought in '81 for $500, a Volvo 164 (briefly) that burned up while I was driving it, and a 4-door Ford Escort. Meh. Gas was still about a buck, though, and you could buy a set of bias-ply tires for $100.
Movies: "Ghostbusters" (Venkman, about Dana's refrigerator growling "ZOOL!": "You don't often see that kind of behavior in a major appliance") and "Indiana Jones" I and II. "Gremlins," meh. But "48 Hrs.," "Aliens," "Gotcha!", "Poltergeist," "War Games," "Star Trek" II and III . . .
Nah, I didn't like the '80s much.
(Just kidding; in a lot of ways it was a great time to be alive and having fun.)
